★ Art Shed Staff Tip

Painting something that lives outside or gets handled a lot, like a letterbox, a garden rock or a skate deck? Let the paint cure overnight, then seal it with a clear spray varnish. The paint is waterproof once dry, but a varnish coat protects your work from scuffs and keeps the colour looking fresh for longer.

How to start a Kent Urban paint marker

  • Shake it. Cap on, shake hard until you hear the mixing ball rattle, then keep shaking a few seconds more. The pigment settles when the marker sits still.
  • Prime it. Cap off, press the nib down on scrap paper a few times until paint flows into the tip. Gentle pumps, not a stabbing frenzy, or you will flood the nib.
  • Paint it. Work light to dark and let each layer dry before you go over it. Kent Urban colours are opaque, so a light colour sits happily on top of a dark one once it is dry.
  • Store it flat. Cap clicked on and lying horizontal keeps the paint spread evenly through the barrel, so the marker is ready next time.

Sets or single colours?

Sets are the easy start and the best value way to build a palette, grouped into colour families like Classic, Pastel, Neutral, Metallic and Fluoro. Single colours are for topping up the ones you use most. Black and white are our best selling single colours in every size, so it is worth grabbing a spare of each.

Questions about Kent Urban paint markers

Are Kent Urban markers permanent?

Yes, once dry. Kent Urban paint is water based while wet, so it cleans up with water before it sets, then dries permanent, waterproof and UV resistant. On slick surfaces like glass or glossy plastic, a clear sealer helps it hold up to handling.

Can you use Kent Urban markers outside?

Yes. They are made for indoor and outdoor use and the paint is UV resistant once dry. For anything outdoors long term, such as letterboxes, garden art or murals, a clear varnish over the top adds extra protection.

Are Kent Urban markers good for kids?

The paint is water based and non toxic, which is why teachers love them for rock painting and class projects. As with any paint, younger children should be supervised and wear old clothes, because the paint is permanent once dry.

What is the difference between Kent Urban and Posca?

Both are water based paint markers that cover opaquely on most surfaces. Kent Urban goes all the way up to a 30mm wide flat nib for mural work and is sold in colour themed sets as well as singles. Many artists use both, and they layer happily together once dry.

Why is my paint marker not working?

It usually needs more shaking or priming. Shake with the cap on until the ball rattles, then press the nib on scrap paper until paint flows. If it has been stored nib up, lay it flat for a while and try again.

Where can I buy Kent Urban paint markers in Australia?

Right here. Art Shed Online stocks the full Kent Urban range, every nib size in sets and single colours, and ships Australia wide from our own stock. You can also shop in person at our Moorabbin, Melbourne and West End, Brisbane stores.
