If you only buy one Kent Urban size, make it the 3mm. It is fine enough for detail and lettering, but it lays down enough paint to fill small shapes and patterns, which is why it is our most popular size for rock painting and craft.

What is the 3mm Fine nib best for?

Rock paintingCardsCanvasCraftClassroom

  • Rock painting patterns, dots and mandalas.
  • Cards and gift tags lettering and small illustrations.
  • Canvas and wood detail over painted backgrounds.
  • Classroom projects where every student needs a reliable all rounder.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip

For perfect rock painting dots, prime the marker well, then dab straight down and lift. Do not drag. Let each dot dry before you add a smaller one on top for that layered mandala look.

Sets or single colours?

The sets are grouped into colour families: Classic, Pastel, Neutral, Metallic, Icon, Mono and Fluoro. Singles come in 20 colours, so you can top up the ones you use most without buying the whole set again.

How to start your marker

  • Shake it. Cap on, shake hard until you hear the mixing ball rattle, then keep shaking a few seconds more. The pigment settles when the marker sits still.
  • Prime it. Cap off, press the nib down on scrap paper a few times until paint flows into the tip. Gentle pumps, not a stabbing frenzy, or you will flood the nib.
  • Paint it. Work light to dark and let each layer dry before you go over it. Kent Urban colours are opaque, so a light colour sits happily on top of a dark one once it is dry.
  • Store it flat. Cap clicked on and lying horizontal keeps the paint spread evenly through the barrel, so the marker is ready next time.
