How to Use Your Kent Urban Paint Marker

  1. Shake it. Cap on, shake well until the mixing ball rattles freely.
  2. Prime the nib. On scrap paper, press the nib down gently a few times until the paint flows right to the tip. Do not pump it hard.
  3. Pick your end. Bullet for even lines and fills, chisel for handstyles and thick and thin strokes. The nib is reversible, so swap ends whenever you need to.
  4. Test first. Do a few strokes on scrap to check the flow and colour.
  5. Let it dry, then layer. Water based acrylic dries fast. Wait until it is touch dry before an outline, a shine or another colour.
  6. Store flat. Click the cap on firmly and store the marker flat.

Getting the Most From a 3mm Fine Nib

The 3mm is the everyday size. Use the bullet end for outlines, sketches and filling small letters, and flip to the chisel end when you want handstyle strokes with real thick and thin.

For bigger pieces, fill the large areas with a 6mm Medium first, let it dry, then come back with the 3mm for outlines, shadows and shines.

Project idea: draw frozen letters on black card: Light Blue fill, White shines, a few icicles hanging off the bottom in Blue.

Need the same colour in a bolder line? Grab the 6mm Medium Light Blue. See every colour in the Kent Urban 3mm Fine paint markers, or browse the full Kent Urban acrylic paint marker range.

Questions About the Kent Urban 3mm Light Blue

How do I do a fade with Kent Urban markers?

Lay down your darkest colour first, then go straight in with the lighter one where they meet while both are still slightly wet. Blue into Light Blue into White is the easiest fade to start with.

What is the difference between Kent Urban 3mm and 6mm?

Line width and coverage. The 3mm Fine draws about 0.8mm to 1.8mm with the bullet end and is the everyday size for blackbooks, outlines and detail. The 6mm Medium draws about 1.2mm to 3mm with the bullet and up to around 5mm with the chisel, so it fills letters and covers bigger areas faster. Lots of artists use the 6mm for fills and the 3mm for outlines.

How do I start a new Kent Urban paint marker?

Shake it well with the cap on until you hear the mixing ball rattle. Then hold it nib down on scrap paper and press the nib gently a few times until the paint flows right to the tip. Do not pump it hard, or it floods. If it ever runs dry mid piece, cap it, shake it and prime it again.

Can I use Kent Urban paint markers outdoors?

Yes. The ink is UV resistant and waterproof once dry, and Kent rates the range for indoor and outdoor use. For anything that lives outside, like a painted deck, a helmet or a piece on a legal wall, a clear outdoor varnish over the top keeps it fresh for longer.

Will Kent Urban paint markers cover black paper?

Yes. The acrylic paint ink is opaque, so it sits on top of black card and dark surfaces instead of soaking in like dye ink. Light colours on very dark backgrounds may need a second coat once the first is dry for full, solid colour.

Do I need to seal Kent Urban paint marker art?

Not on paper or in a blackbook, where the dry ink is permanent on its own. On things that get handled, worn or left outside, like skate decks, sneakers, helmets and jackets, a clear sealer or varnish adds a tough top layer that protects your work from scuffs.

How should I store Kent Urban paint markers?

Flat, with the caps clicked on firmly. Flat storage keeps the paint spread evenly through the marker so it is ready to go, and a tight cap stops the nib drying out between sessions.

Where can I buy Kent Urban paint markers in Australia?

Right here. Art Shed Online is an authorised Australian stockist of Kent Urban, buying through the official Australian distributor, so you get genuine stock, never a grey import. We ship fast Australia wide, and our team are artists who use these products themselves, so ask us anything. Kent Urban Light Blue also comes in the 6mm Medium size, and we carry every other Kent Urban nib size too.
