Mont Marte Dimension Acrylic Premium
Raw Sienna 75ml
Warm transparent golden brown: the classical earth tone for underpainting, glazing, and natural light.

Raw Sienna is a warm, golden yellow-brown earth pigment in the Dimension Acrylic Premium range, based on PY42 (Synthetic Yellow Iron Oxide). One of the most historically significant earth pigments in Western painting, it delivers a warm, slightly orange-tinted golden brown that reads as the colour of warm sand, sunlit earth, aged wood, and natural light on stone. Semi-transparent, it is ideal for underpainting and glazing, building warm luminous tone without the opacity that would block out the underlayer. In the ultra-thick heavy body formula, it holds knife marks and sculptural texture without slumping. Dries to a gloss finish with a Blue Wool Level 7+ lightfast rating. Available in 75ml tubes and 250ml pots.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Raw Sienna is the classic underpainting colour for warm-key paintings. Lay a thin toning pass over canvas, allow it to dry, then build the painting over the warm ground. The golden undertone unifies the final work and adds warmth to every passage painted over it.

PY42 Raw Sienna delivers the warm golden-brown that has anchored earth palettes in Western painting for centuries. It reads as natural, sun-warmed, and gently luminous.

About Mont Marte Dimension Acrylic Premium

Founded in Australia in 2002, Mont Marte creates high-quality fine art materials for students, hobbyists, and professional artists worldwide. Dimension Acrylic Premium is their flagship heavy body range: an ultra-thick, high-viscosity acrylic formulated for impasto work, palette knife painting, and any technique that demands a paint that holds its shape. With a Blue Wool Level 7+ lightfast rating (equivalent to ASTM I), the 48-colour range is built for serious, permanent work. Available in 75ml tubes and 250ml pots.

What is the difference between Raw Sienna and Yellow Ochre?

Raw Sienna is slightly more orange and transparent than Yellow Ochre. Yellow Ochre is more opaque and has a cleaner, more neutral golden tone. Both are warm earth pigments but they behave differently in glazing: Raw Sienna is better for warm transparent underpainting while Yellow Ochre is better for opaque coverage.

Can I use Dimension Acrylic Raw Sienna with a palette knife?

Yes. Palette knife application is one of the primary uses for Dimension Acrylic Premium. The ultra-thick formula sits firm on the knife, deposits a clean hard-edged layer on the surface, and holds the shape of each mark as it dries without slumping. Apply straight from the tube for maximum texture and sharp ridges.

Is Raw Sienna suitable for portrait underpainting?

Yes. A thin toning pass of Raw Sienna is a classical underpainting choice for warm-lit portrait work. The transparent golden tone provides warmth and visual depth that reads through subsequent flesh-tone layers.

How long does Dimension Acrylic Raw Sienna take to dry?

Thin applications dry in 20-30 minutes. Heavy impasto builds applied with a palette knife can take 1-2 hours to dry fully. Drying time extends in cold or humid conditions. Do not apply a second thick layer over the first until the lower layer has dried completely to the touch.

What surfaces can I use Dimension Acrylic Raw Sienna on?

Canvas, board, wood, air-dry clay, plaster, cardboard, paper, leather, and most rigid plastics. For best adhesion on non-porous or slick surfaces, apply a coat of gesso or acrylic primer first. Dimension Acrylic Premium is compatible with all Mont Marte acrylic mediums, gels, and impasto pastes.
