Burnt Umber is the richest and warmest of the two umbers in the Dimension Acrylic Premium range, based on PBr7 (calcined iron oxide brown). Deeper and redder than Raw Umber, it is the go-to dark brown for warm shadow passages, rich timber and wood tones, and underpainting. It sits between Burnt Sienna (lighter, more orange) and Van Dyke Brown (darker, cooler) in the warm dark spectrum, occupying the most useful position for the broadest range of brown and dark mixing work. Fully opaque, it covers in one pass and builds rich, warm depth in impasto. In the ultra-thick heavy body formula, it holds knife marks and sculptural texture without slumping. Dries to a gloss finish with a Blue Wool Level 7+ lightfast rating. Available in 75ml tubes and 250ml pots.

Thin applications dry in 20-30 minutes. Heavy impasto builds applied with a palette knife can take 1-2 hours to dry fully. Drying time extends in cold or humid conditions. Do not apply a second thick layer over the first until the lower layer has dried completely to the touch.

What surfaces can I use Dimension Acrylic Burnt Umber on?

Canvas, board, wood, air-dry clay, plaster, cardboard, paper, leather, and most rigid plastics. For best adhesion on non-porous or slick surfaces, apply a coat of gesso or acrylic primer first. Dimension Acrylic Premium is compatible with all Mont Marte acrylic mediums, gels, and impasto pastes.
