Mont Marte Dimension Acrylic Premium
Brilliant Red 75ml
The vivid, centred red: bright, bold, and unmixed for maximum red impact in thick impasto.

Brilliant Red is the clearest, most centred red in the Dimension Acrylic Premium range: brighter and more saturated than Permanent Red, less orange-leaning than Azo Vermillion, and ideal when a pure, undiluted, primary-quality red is required. Based on PR254 (Pyrrole Red), it is high in intensity and semi-opaque, giving it both the vivid brightness of a signal red and a degree of luminous transparency in thick application. It is the red of poppies, ripe berries, and bold contemporary colour work. In the ultra-thick heavy body formula, it holds every knife mark and sculptural peak without slumping. Dries to a gloss finish with a Blue Wool Level 7+ lightfast rating. Available in 75ml tubes and 250ml pots.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Brilliant Red is at its best used straight from the tube in bold, confident marks. Thinning it with acrylic medium (not water) preserves its body while adding translucency. For a slightly cooler, more controlled red, shift it with a small touch of Carmine or Permanent Red.

What Makes This Colour Essential

Consistency
Ultra-Thick Heavy Body
Brilliant Red sits firm on the palette knife and holds every ridge and peak in the ultra-thick Dimension Acrylic Premium formula without slumping or levelling.
Saturation
Maximum Red Intensity
PR254 Pyrrole Red is among the most vivid and lightfast red pigments available. Brilliant Red delivers full-strength saturated red from the tube with no mixing required.
Versatility
Centre of the Red Family
Brilliant Red's central position in the spectrum makes it equally useful for mixing toward warm red-orange (with Azo Vermillion) and cool crimson (with Carmine or Magenta).
Lightfastness
Blue Wool Level 7+ / ASTM I
Rated at Blue Wool Level 7 or above (equivalent to ASTM I), Dimension Acrylic Premium Brilliant Red is formulated to remain unchanged for more than 100 years under museum-quality lighting conditions. Purpose-built for archival and professional work.

Mixing with Brilliant Red

Brilliant Red is a high-saturation starting point for both warm and cool red directions, sitting centrally enough in the red spectrum to shift convincingly in either direction.

About Mont Marte Dimension Acrylic Premium

Founded in Australia in 2002, Mont Marte creates high-quality fine art materials for students, hobbyists, and professional artists worldwide. Dimension Acrylic Premium is their flagship heavy body range: an ultra-thick, high-viscosity acrylic formulated for impasto work, palette knife painting, and any technique that demands a paint that holds its shape. With a Blue Wool Level 7+ lightfast rating (equivalent to ASTM I), the 48-colour range is built for serious, permanent work. Available in 75ml tubes and 250ml pots.

Is Brilliant Red the same pigment as Azo Vermillion?

Both use PR254 (Pyrrole Red) as the pigment base, but they are formulated to different working colours. Azo Vermillion is warm and orange-leaning. Brilliant Red is more centrally positioned in the red spectrum with greater brightness and less orange character.

Can I use Dimension Acrylic Brilliant Red with a palette knife?

Yes. Palette knife application is one of the primary uses for Dimension Acrylic Premium. The ultra-thick formula sits firm on the knife, deposits a clean hard-edged layer on the surface, and holds the shape of each mark as it dries without slumping. Apply straight from the tube for maximum texture and sharp ridges.

Is Brilliant Red lightfast?

Yes. PR254 is one of the most lightfast organic red pigments. Dimension Acrylic Premium Brilliant Red carries a Blue Wool Level 7+ rating, making it suitable for professional, archival, and exhibition work.

How long does Dimension Acrylic Brilliant Red take to dry?

Thin applications dry in 20-30 minutes. Heavy impasto builds applied with a palette knife can take 1-2 hours to dry fully. Drying time extends in cold or humid conditions. Do not apply a second thick layer over the first until the lower layer has dried completely to the touch.

What surfaces can I use Dimension Acrylic Brilliant Red on?

Canvas, board, wood, air-dry clay, plaster, cardboard, paper, leather, and most rigid plastics. For best adhesion on non-porous or slick surfaces, apply a coat of gesso or acrylic primer first. Dimension Acrylic Premium is compatible with all Mont Marte acrylic mediums, gels, and impasto pastes.
