Viridian is the classical cool green in the Dimension Acrylic Premium range, based on PG18 (Hydrated Chromium Oxide). It is the green with a cool, slightly blue-toned clarity that makes it the preferred choice for botanical illustration, cool foliage, and any passage where a clean, natural green is needed without the intensity of Phthalo Green. Semi-transparent, it has a luminous, gem-like quality in thick application and glazes beautifully over yellow and earth tones. In the ultra-thick heavy body formula, it holds knife marks and impasto texture without slumping. Dries to a gloss finish with a Blue Wool Level 7+ lightfast rating. Available in 75ml tubes and 250ml pots.

Is Viridian the same as Chrome Green or Hookers Green?

No. Viridian (PG18 Hydrated Chromium Oxide) is a distinct cool, transparent green. Chrome Green is a mixture of Prussian Blue and Chrome Yellow, now largely replaced by modern equivalents. Hookers Green Deep is darker and warmer. Viridian's cool, transparent character is unique in the range.

Can I use Dimension Acrylic Viridian with a palette knife?

Yes. Palette knife application is one of the primary uses for Dimension Acrylic Premium. The ultra-thick formula sits firm on the knife, deposits a clean hard-edged layer on the surface, and holds the shape of each mark as it dries without slumping. Apply straight from the tube for maximum texture and sharp ridges.

Can Viridian be used for sea green passages?

Yes. Mixed with Titanium White or Cyan Blue, Viridian gives the cool, clear green of shallow ocean water. It is particularly effective for passages of sea green in coastal landscape painting.

How long does Dimension Acrylic Viridian take to dry?

Thin applications dry in 20-30 minutes. Heavy impasto builds applied with a palette knife can take 1-2 hours to dry fully. Drying time extends in cold or humid conditions. Do not apply a second thick layer over the first until the lower layer has dried completely to the touch.

What surfaces can I use Dimension Acrylic Viridian on?

Canvas, board, wood, air-dry clay, plaster, cardboard, paper, leather, and most rigid plastics. For best adhesion on non-porous or slick surfaces, apply a coat of gesso or acrylic primer first. Dimension Acrylic Premium is compatible with all Mont Marte acrylic mediums, gels, and impasto pastes.
