Mont Marte Dimension Acrylic Premium Phthalo Blue 75ml Heavy Body Acrylic Paint
Our everyday low price
Phthalo Blue is the cool, powerful, transparent blue in the Dimension Acrylic Premium range, based on PB15:3 (Phthalo Blue Green Shade). Where Ultramarine Blue is warm and red-leaning, Phthalo Blue is cool and green-leaning, making it the essential blue for mixing the cleanest, most vivid greens and the most intense, cold-spectrum blues. Its transparency gives it a luminous, staining quality that makes deep blue passages glow in thick impasto. Extremely high in tinting strength, a very small amount goes a long way in any mix. In the ultra-thick heavy body formula, it holds knife marks and texture without slumping. Dries to a gloss finish with a Blue Wool Level 7+ lightfast rating. Available in 75ml tubes and 250ml pots.
What Makes This Colour Essential
Mixing with Phthalo Blue
Phthalo Blue is the powerhouse mixing blue of the range. Its cool, green-leaning character and very high tinting strength make it essential for clean greens, cold blues, and deep tonal darks.
About Mont Marte Dimension Acrylic Premium
Founded in Australia in 2002, Mont Marte creates high-quality fine art materials for students, hobbyists, and professional artists worldwide. Dimension Acrylic Premium is their flagship heavy body range: an ultra-thick, high-viscosity acrylic formulated for impasto work, palette knife painting, and any technique that demands a paint that holds its shape. With a Blue Wool Level 7+ lightfast rating (equivalent to ASTM I), the 48-colour range is built for serious, permanent work. Available in 75ml tubes and 250ml pots.
What is the difference between Phthalo Blue and Ultramarine Blue?
Ultramarine Blue (PB29) is warm and red-leaning, better for purples, warm sky passages, and chromatic darks. Phthalo Blue (PB15:3) is cool and green-leaning, better for clean greens, cold sky passages, and intense transparent deep blues. Both are useful in a full palette.
Can I use Dimension Acrylic Phthalo Blue with a palette knife?
Yes. Palette knife application is one of the primary uses for Dimension Acrylic Premium. The ultra-thick formula sits firm on the knife, deposits a clean hard-edged layer on the surface, and holds the shape of each mark as it dries without slumping. Apply straight from the tube for maximum texture and sharp ridges.
Why does Phthalo Blue overpower my mixes?
PB15:3 has exceptionally high tinting strength. Always add Phthalo Blue to your other colour in very small amounts. Start with a fraction of what you think you need and add more gradually.
How long does Dimension Acrylic Phthalo Blue take to dry?
Thin applications dry in 20-30 minutes. Heavy impasto builds applied with a palette knife can take 1-2 hours to dry fully. Drying time extends in cold or humid conditions. Do not apply a second thick layer over the first until the lower layer has dried completely to the touch.
What surfaces can I use Dimension Acrylic Phthalo Blue on?
Canvas, board, wood, air-dry clay, plaster, cardboard, paper, leather, and most rigid plastics. For best adhesion on non-porous or slick surfaces, apply a coat of gesso or acrylic primer first. Dimension Acrylic Premium is compatible with all Mont Marte acrylic mediums, gels, and impasto pastes.
