Mont Marte Dimension Acrylic Premium
Sand 75ml
Warm, earthy, and pre-mixed: the natural desert tone for landscapes, backgrounds, and textured grounds.

Sand is a warm, mid-toned earthy yellow-brown in the Dimension Acrylic Premium range, pre-mixed to the exact tone of dry beach sand or desert earth. It fills the tonal gap between Yellow Ochre and Cream, offering a full-bodied, opaque earthy neutral that saves time building warm ground passages from component colours. As a background tone it unifies warm-keyed landscape and still life paintings from the first mark. In the ultra-thick Dimension Acrylic Premium formula, it holds palette knife ridges and impasto texture without slumping. Dries to a gloss finish with a Blue Wool Level 7+ lightfast rating. Available in 75ml tubes and 250ml pots.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Sand makes an excellent first impasto layer for desert, beach, and dry-earth landscapes. Apply it with a large palette knife in uneven strokes to create an immediate ground texture, then work darker tones into the troughs and lighter highlights onto the ridges.

What Makes This Colour Essential

Consistency
Ultra-Thick Heavy Body
Sand arrives in the full ultra-thick Dimension Acrylic Premium formula. Applied with a palette knife or stiff brush, it creates immediate textured grounds that dry permanently in place.
Tone
Pre-Mixed Warm Earth Neutral
The warm iron-oxide base of Sand gives it the exact tone of natural dry earth and beach sand. No palette mixing is needed to arrive at this tone: it is consistent and repeatable from the tube.
Coverage
Fully Opaque in One Pass
Sand is opaque and covers previous layers in a single thick application. Ideal for painting over a dark ground or establishing a warm-toned base quickly.
Lightfastness
Blue Wool Level 7+ / ASTM I
Rated at Blue Wool Level 7 or above (equivalent to ASTM I), Dimension Acrylic Premium Sand is formulated to remain unchanged for more than 100 years under museum-quality lighting conditions. Purpose-built for archival and professional work.

Mixing with Sand

Sand works best as a standalone background tone or as a base for mixing muted, warm earth tones. Its pre-mixed warmth saves time building ground passages from scratch.

About Mont Marte Dimension Acrylic Premium

Founded in Australia in 2002, Mont Marte creates high-quality fine art materials for students, hobbyists, and professional artists worldwide. Dimension Acrylic Premium is their flagship heavy body range: an ultra-thick, high-viscosity acrylic formulated for impasto work, palette knife painting, and any technique that demands a paint that holds its shape. With a Blue Wool Level 7+ lightfast rating (equivalent to ASTM I), the 48-colour range is built for serious, permanent work. Available in 75ml tubes and 250ml pots.

Is Sand useful for abstract painting or only landscape work?

Sand is versatile across painting subjects. In abstract work, it provides a warm, natural tone for backgrounds and colour fields. In landscape, it is most immediately useful for beach, desert, and earthy ground passages. It also works well in still life for warm neutral backgrounds.

Can I use Dimension Acrylic Sand with a palette knife?

Yes. Palette knife application is one of the primary uses for Dimension Acrylic Premium. The ultra-thick formula sits firm on the knife, deposits a clean hard-edged layer on the surface, and holds the shape of each mark as it dries without slumping. Apply straight from the tube for maximum texture and sharp ridges.

Can Sand be used as a toning ground before painting?

Yes. Apply Sand in a thin or heavy impasto pass over canvas or board to establish a warm toned ground before beginning the main painting. Its opacity means the ground will remain consistent and not read through in unwanted ways.

How long does Dimension Acrylic Sand take to dry?

Thin applications dry in 20-30 minutes. Heavy impasto builds applied with a palette knife can take 1-2 hours to dry fully. Drying time extends in cold or humid conditions. Do not apply a second thick layer over the first until the lower layer has dried completely to the touch.

What surfaces can I use Dimension Acrylic Sand on?

Canvas, board, wood, air-dry clay, plaster, cardboard, paper, leather, and most rigid plastics. For best adhesion on non-porous or slick surfaces, apply a coat of gesso or acrylic primer first. Dimension Acrylic Premium is compatible with all Mont Marte acrylic mediums, gels, and impasto pastes.
