Mont Marte Dimension Acrylic Premium
Raw Umber 75ml
Cool earthy brown: the natural shadow tone for cool-keyed painting and neutral dark mixing.

Raw Umber is the cooler, greener-leaning umber in the Dimension Acrylic Premium range, based on the raw (uncalcined) form of PBr7. Where Burnt Umber is warm and red-tinged, Raw Umber is cooler with a faint olive or greenish cast, making it the natural shadow colour for cool-keyed subjects, northern-light interiors, and landscapes where a warm-biased dark would feel out of place. It is particularly valuable for cool shadow passages in portrait and figure work, and as a base for mixing cooler neutrals. Fully opaque and reliable, it covers in one pass. In the ultra-thick heavy body formula, it holds knife marks and impasto texture without slumping. Dries to a gloss finish with a Blue Wool Level 7+ lightfast rating. Available in 75ml tubes and 250ml pots.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Raw Umber is the best single underpainting colour for cool-keyed portraits painted in northern or overcast light. Its slightly olive, cool undertone reads as natural shadow rather than warm earth when it shows through subsequent cool flesh passages. It also makes the most muted, neutral darks when mixed with Paynes Grey.

About Mont Marte Dimension Acrylic Premium

Founded in Australia in 2002, Mont Marte creates high-quality fine art materials for students, hobbyists, and professional artists worldwide. Dimension Acrylic Premium is their flagship heavy body range: an ultra-thick, high-viscosity acrylic formulated for impasto work, palette knife painting, and any technique that demands a paint that holds its shape. With a Blue Wool Level 7+ lightfast rating (equivalent to ASTM I), the 48-colour range is built for serious, permanent work. Available in 75ml tubes and 250ml pots.

When should I use Raw Umber instead of Burnt Umber?

Raw Umber is the better choice for cool-keyed subjects, overcast-light landscape, and cool portrait shadow. Burnt Umber is better for warm-lit subjects, rich timber and wood tones, and warm earth passages. Both have a place in a complete palette.

Can I use Dimension Acrylic Raw Umber with a palette knife?

Yes. Palette knife application is one of the primary uses for Dimension Acrylic Premium. The ultra-thick formula sits firm on the knife, deposits a clean hard-edged layer on the surface, and holds the shape of each mark as it dries without slumping. Apply straight from the tube for maximum texture and sharp ridges.

Is Raw Umber useful for landscape painting?

Yes. Raw Umber's cool, slightly olive tone is a natural fit for dry, overcast, or cool-keyed landscapes. It works as the shadow dark for grey stone, weathered wood, and cool shadow on earth.

How long does Dimension Acrylic Raw Umber take to dry?

Thin applications dry in 20-30 minutes. Heavy impasto builds applied with a palette knife can take 1-2 hours to dry fully. Drying time extends in cold or humid conditions. Do not apply a second thick layer over the first until the lower layer has dried completely to the touch.

What surfaces can I use Dimension Acrylic Raw Umber on?

Canvas, board, wood, air-dry clay, plaster, cardboard, paper, leather, and most rigid plastics. For best adhesion on non-porous or slick surfaces, apply a coat of gesso or acrylic primer first. Dimension Acrylic Premium is compatible with all Mont Marte acrylic mediums, gels, and impasto pastes.
