Mont Marte Dimension Acrylic Premium Carmine 75ml Heavy Body Acrylic Paint
Our everyday low price
Carmine is the deepest, most jewel-like red in the Dimension Acrylic Premium range: a rich, cool crimson with a blue-leaning character that reads as dark rose, deep wine, and the inner shadow of red fabric and botanical forms. Based on PR176 (Benzimidazolone Carmine), it is semi-transparent, which means it glazes beautifully over lighter reds and purples to create luminous depth. In the ultra-thick heavy body formula, even the semi-transparent Carmine holds palette knife ridges and impasto marks without slumping, giving transparent depth and sculptural texture in the same paint application. Dries to a gloss finish with a Blue Wool Level 7+ lightfast rating. Available in 75ml tubes and 250ml pots.
What Makes This Colour Essential
Mixing with Carmine
Carmine's cool, deep crimson is most powerful in the darkest and richest corners of the red and purple families.
About Mont Marte Dimension Acrylic Premium
Founded in Australia in 2002, Mont Marte creates high-quality fine art materials for students, hobbyists, and professional artists worldwide. Dimension Acrylic Premium is their flagship heavy body range: an ultra-thick, high-viscosity acrylic formulated for impasto work, palette knife painting, and any technique that demands a paint that holds its shape. With a Blue Wool Level 7+ lightfast rating (equivalent to ASTM I), the 48-colour range is built for serious, permanent work. Available in 75ml tubes and 250ml pots.
Why is Carmine semi-transparent in a heavy body range?
Transparency in acrylic paint is a property of the pigment itself, not the binder thickness. PR176 Benzimidazolone Carmine is an inherently transparent pigment. In the ultra-thick Dimension Acrylic Premium formula, Carmine retains full sculptural body and holds texture on the surface, but the pigment itself allows light to pass through, giving it a luminous, jewel-like quality.
Can I use Dimension Acrylic Carmine with a palette knife?
Yes. Palette knife application is one of the primary uses for Dimension Acrylic Premium. The ultra-thick formula sits firm on the knife, deposits a clean hard-edged layer on the surface, and holds the shape of each mark as it dries without slumping. Apply straight from the tube for maximum texture and sharp ridges.
How does Carmine differ from Magenta and Rose Madder?
Carmine is the darkest and most crimson of the three. Magenta is brighter and more pink-red. Rose Madder sits between them in warmth and transparency. For the deepest, richest red glaze or dark botanical, Carmine is the correct choice.
How long does Dimension Acrylic Carmine take to dry?
Thin applications dry in 20-30 minutes. Heavy impasto builds applied with a palette knife can take 1-2 hours to dry fully. Drying time extends in cold or humid conditions. Do not apply a second thick layer over the first until the lower layer has dried completely to the touch.
What surfaces can I use Dimension Acrylic Carmine on?
Canvas, board, wood, air-dry clay, plaster, cardboard, paper, leather, and most rigid plastics. For best adhesion on non-porous or slick surfaces, apply a coat of gesso or acrylic primer first. Dimension Acrylic Premium is compatible with all Mont Marte acrylic mediums, gels, and impasto pastes.
