Mont Marte Dimension Acrylic Premium
Neutral Grey 75ml
Balanced mid-grey: the foundation tone for achromatic work, shadows, and value studies.

Neutral Grey is the perfectly balanced mid-grey in the Dimension Acrylic Premium range, pre-mixed to a 50/50 value point between black and white. Based on PW6 (Titanium White) and PBk7 (Carbon Black), it is fully neutral with no colour bias, making it the correct choice wherever a genuinely achromatic tone is required. Useful as a mixing grey, a value study tone, a shadow modifier, and a background for colour-study work, it is one of the most versatile neutral colours in the range. In the ultra-thick heavy body formula, it holds knife marks and impasto texture without slumping. Dries to a gloss finish with a Blue Wool Level 7+ lightfast rating. Available in 75ml tubes and 250ml pots.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Use Neutral Grey straight from the tube for value studies and tonal sketches before committing to colour. It is also the most reliable mixing base for adjusting the value of any colour without shifting its hue significantly: add a small amount to any paint to lower its value without warming or cooling it.

About Mont Marte Dimension Acrylic Premium

Founded in Australia in 2002, Mont Marte creates high-quality fine art materials for students, hobbyists, and professional artists worldwide. Dimension Acrylic Premium is their flagship heavy body range: an ultra-thick, high-viscosity acrylic formulated for impasto work, palette knife painting, and any technique that demands a paint that holds its shape. With a Blue Wool Level 7+ lightfast rating (equivalent to ASTM I), the 48-colour range is built for serious, permanent work. Available in 75ml tubes and 250ml pots.

When is Neutral Grey more useful than mixing grey from black and white?

A pre-mixed Neutral Grey is consistent and guaranteed balanced. Mixing black and white on the palette can produce slightly cool or slightly warm greys depending on the exact pigments used. For value study work and precise neutral passages, the pre-mixed consistency of Neutral Grey is an advantage.

Can I use Dimension Acrylic Neutral Grey with a palette knife?

Yes. Palette knife application is one of the primary uses for Dimension Acrylic Premium. The ultra-thick formula sits firm on the knife, deposits a clean hard-edged layer on the surface, and holds the shape of each mark as it dries without slumping. Apply straight from the tube for maximum texture and sharp ridges.

Can Neutral Grey be used to neutralise a colour that is too saturated?

Yes. Adding a small amount of Neutral Grey to any colour reduces its saturation and lowers its value simultaneously, producing a more muted, atmospheric tone. This is particularly useful for adjusting colours in the mid-ground and background of landscape paintings.

How long does Dimension Acrylic Neutral Grey take to dry?

Thin applications dry in 20-30 minutes. Heavy impasto builds applied with a palette knife can take 1-2 hours to dry fully. Drying time extends in cold or humid conditions. Do not apply a second thick layer over the first until the lower layer has dried completely to the touch.

What surfaces can I use Dimension Acrylic Neutral Grey on?

Canvas, board, wood, air-dry clay, plaster, cardboard, paper, leather, and most rigid plastics. For best adhesion on non-porous or slick surfaces, apply a coat of gesso or acrylic primer first. Dimension Acrylic Premium is compatible with all Mont Marte acrylic mediums, gels, and impasto pastes.
