Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Paint 40ml - Titanium White
Our everyday low price
Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Titanium White 40ml is the primary white in the Studio Blend range: the brightest, most opaque, and highest-tinting-strength white available in oil painting. Based on PW6 (Titanium Dioxide), it is the modern standard for white in oil painting, replacing older whites such as Lead White and Zinc White as the all-purpose studio choice. Fully opaque with a clean, neutral-to-cool tone, Titanium White is used in virtually every mix where a colour needs to be lightened, and it is the essential colour for alla prima and impasto work where opaque coverage and bright highlights are required.
What Makes This Colour Essential
Mixing With Titanium White
Titanium White is used in virtually every mixture where a colour needs to be lightened. The most important practical consideration is its high tinting strength: always add white to the colour rather than the colour to white, and add it gradually. In sky painting, Titanium White with small amounts of French Ultramarine gives the full range from pale horizon blue to deep zenith blue. In portraiture, Titanium White with Naples Yellow and Burnt Sienna gives the foundation skin light tone for fair to medium complexions.
In alla prima and direct painting, Titanium White used thickly in highlight passages gives the impasto quality and brightness that defines the light areas of a painting and gives the visual contrast that makes shadow areas recede. In glazing techniques, Titanium White is typically not used in the glaze layers themselves (transparency is the point of glazing), but it is the foundation of the underpainting and light-area blocking that the glazes build on.
About Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil: Melbourne Made Since 1966
Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the rebrand of the former Art Prism range, with fresh new packaging and artwork. The formula is unchanged: same pigments, same linseed oil base, same manufacturing standards. Made in Epping, Victoria since 1966. The 26-colour range is fully compatible with all Art Spectrum oil mediums and varnishes, and is also available in 150ml tubes.
What is the difference between Titanium White and Zinc White?
Titanium White (PW6) is fully opaque with high tinting strength and fast coverage. Zinc White (PW4) is semi-transparent with lower tinting strength and a cooler tone. Titanium White is the all-purpose studio white for direct painting and highlights. Zinc White is preferred when a gentler, more transparent white is needed for delicate tinting or soft blending without overpowering colour.
Is Titanium White good for all oil painting techniques?
Yes for most techniques. For alla prima, direct painting, impasto, and any technique requiring opaque highlights and clean lightening of colours, Titanium White is the best choice. For classical layered glazing techniques, some painters prefer to use Zinc White in intermediate layers to preserve transparency, reserving Titanium White for the final highlight passages.
Why does Titanium White dry slowly?
White pigments require a higher volume of pigment relative to oil than coloured pigments do, and the resulting high oil content slows drying. Additionally, PW6 does not contain the natural driers found in earth pigments. This slow drying can be an advantage in alla prima work, giving extended blending time.
Is Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil the same as Art Prism?
Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the direct successor to the Art Prism range with new packaging and artwork only. The formula, pigments, and linseed oil base are unchanged.
Is Titanium White lightfast?
Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Titanium White carries an ASTM I lightfastness rating. PW6 (Titanium Dioxide) is one of the most permanent and lightfast pigments known.
