Dioxazine Purple (PV23) is an exceptionally deep, high-chroma violet pigment: mixing red and blue will never produce the same depth or saturation, which is why Dioxazine Purple is one of the most widely used tube colours in professional oil painting. Cadmium Orange Hue gives an immediate, vivid warm orange that mixed versions rarely achieve without looking muddy. These two additions are what separate the Set of 9 from a strictly limited-palette approach. The Logic Behind This Colour Selection

Where the Set of 6 is built around the primary triad and a small supporting cast, the Set of 9 is built around practical painting needs. The warm side of the colour wheel is covered thoroughly: Cadmium Yellow Hue, Cadmium Orange Hue, Cadmium Red Hue, Yellow Ochre, and Burnt Sienna form a complete warm-colour foundation ranging from high-chroma yellow to transparent red-brown. This warm range is essential for Australian landscape, portrait, and figurative painting where warm light and warm earth tones dominate.

On the cool side, Cobalt Blue Hue provides a neutral, mid-value blue well suited to Australian skies and soft atmospheric work. Viridian Hue covers the chromatic cool-green range. What is the difference between the Set of 6 and the Set of 9?

The Set of 6 is a primary-focused limited palette built for beginners and painters who want to learn to mix colour from scratch. It includes Cadmium Yellow Hue, Cadmium Red Hue, French Ultramarine, Viridian Hue, Yellow Ochre, and Zinc White. The Set of 9 is an expanded palette with a wider chromatic range, replacing French Ultramarine with Cobalt Blue Hue and adding Cadmium Orange Hue, Dioxazine Purple, and Burnt Sienna, with Titanium White in place of Zinc White. The Set of 9 is suited to painters who want ready-to-use secondary colours, better coverage of warm earth tones, and access to the deep violet range Dioxazine Purple provides without mixing.

Why does the Set of 9 use Cobalt Blue Hue instead of French Ultramarine?

French Ultramarine and Cobalt Blue Hue behave very differently on the palette. French Ultramarine is a deep, warm-biased blue that mixes warm purples easily and produces dark, rich shadows when combined with earth colours. Cobalt Blue Hue is a more neutral, mid-value blue with a softer appearance that is well suited to open sky, soft atmospheric passages, and light-filled work. The Set of 9, with Dioxazine Purple already covering the deep violet range, does not need French Ultramarine for purple-mixing in the same way the Set of 6 does. Cobalt Blue Hue brings a different quality to the palette that complements the rest of the Set of 9 selection.

Is Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil the same as Art Prism?

Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the direct successor to the Art Prism range with new packaging and artwork only. The formula, pigments, and linseed oil base are unchanged. The Set of 9 Studio Blend Oil is the same product as the former Art Prism Set of 9 in all respects other than the packaging.

Can I add individual Studio Blend Oil colours to this set?

Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is available as individual 40ml and 150ml tubes across the full 26-colour range. The set colours are the same formula and quality as the individual tube colours, so they mix and layer consistently. Common additions to the Set of 9 palette include Ivory Black or a dark neutral for shadow work, French Ultramarine for a warmer deep blue, Raw Umber for fast-drying underpainting, or additional earth colours such as Raw Sienna or Burnt Umber.

Are the set colours compatible with other brands of oil paint?
