Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Paint 40ml - Cerulean Blue Hue
Our everyday low price
Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Cerulean Blue Hue 40ml is the lightest, brightest, and coolest blue in the range. With its characteristic sky-blue, slightly greenish cast, Cerulean Blue Hue is the natural choice for high-key sky passages, pale coastal waters, atmospheric haze, and the cool, clear light of an open-air scene. As a hue colour it captures the distinctive cerulean character with ASTM I lightfastness. Where French Ultramarine anchors deep, violet-dark passages and Cobalt Blue Hue holds the mid-value range, Cerulean Blue Hue handles the high-key, light-valued blue register that sky, water, and atmospheric perspective demand.
What Makes This Colour Essential
Mixing With Cerulean Blue Hue
Cerulean Blue Hue's high-key, cool, slightly green-biased character makes it indispensable for sky, water, and atmosphere. Mixed with Titanium White it produces the clear, clean pale blue of open sky at high noon. As you add more white and reduce the Cerulean toward the horizon, add a small touch of Yellow Ochre or Naples Yellow to warm the value and give the characteristic hazy, warm-light quality of sky near the horizon. For cloud shadow, a small amount of Cerulean Blue Hue mixed into a grey (Titanium White plus a little Ivory Black or Payne's Grey) gives the cool, atmospheric grey of shadow sides.
With Lemon Yellow, Cerulean Blue Hue gives fresh, clean, slightly cool greens ideal for spring foliage, grass in strong light, and the bright mid-greens of coastal vegetation. With Sap Green it gives a brighter, cleaner version of that green. The cooler, lighter character of Cerulean Blue Hue means it is far less dominant in mixtures than French Ultramarine, which makes it easier to control in small amounts.
About Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil: Melbourne Made Since 1966
Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the rebrand of the former Art Prism range, with fresh new packaging and artwork. The formula is unchanged: same pigments, same linseed oil base, same manufacturing standards. Made in Epping, Victoria since 1966. The 26-colour range is fully compatible with all Art Spectrum oil mediums and varnishes, and is also available in 150ml tubes.
What is the difference between Cerulean Blue Hue and Cobalt Blue Hue?
Cerulean Blue Hue is lighter in value, cooler in character, and has a slightly greenish bias compared to Cobalt Blue Hue, which is darker, warmer, and more neutral. Cerulean is the better choice for pale, high-key sky and coastal water; Cobalt Blue Hue handles mid-value blue passages and more versatile colour mixing. Many landscape painters use Cerulean for sky and Cobalt Blue or French Ultramarine for darker water and shadow.
What is the difference between Cerulean Blue Hue and French Ultramarine?
They are at opposite ends of the blue family in the range. French Ultramarine is a deep, dark, violet-leaning blue for shadow, dark sky, and deep water. Cerulean Blue Hue is a pale, cool, slightly green-biased blue for open sky, atmosphere, and pale water. They are complementary rather than interchangeable, and many painters use both.
Is Cerulean Blue Hue good for painting Australian sky?
Yes. The characteristic Australian summer sky, with its intense, clear blue and bright horizon, is well served by Cerulean Blue Hue. At full strength it gives the saturated upper sky blue; lightened with Titanium White and warmed slightly with a touch of Yellow Ochre it gives the hazier, paler blue of the horizon. For late afternoon sky with warmth, shifting toward Cobalt Blue Hue or adding a small amount of Alizarin Crimson gives depth.
Is Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil the same as Art Prism?
Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the direct successor to the Art Prism range with new packaging and artwork only. The formula, pigments, and linseed oil base are unchanged.
Is 40ml enough Cerulean Blue Hue?
For most painters, 40ml is a good working size for Cerulean Blue Hue. Landscape painters who use it extensively for sky passages in large-format work may prefer the economy of the 150ml tube.
