Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Cadmium Orange Hue 40ml delivers the pure, saturated, warm orange character of genuine cadmium orange at a studio-friendly price. Cadmium Orange Hue sits at the warmest and most chromatic point between red and yellow: fully opaque, strongly tinting, and impossible to mix cleanly from other colours. As a hue formulation it achieves ASTM I lightfastness using synthetic pigments. It is the orange of the Australian outback at sunset, of autumn foliage at its peak, and of the warm-hot colour passages that anchor still life and figurative composition.

Mixed with Cadmium Yellow Hue it gives warm golden yellow; with Cadmium Red Hue it gives deep, warm red-orange. With Titanium White it gives a range of peachy, warm, high-key skin tones that are difficult to achieve any other way. Use it sparingly in landscape for the warmest passages of late-afternoon light: a small amount mixed into Naples Yellow or Yellow Ochre takes a background sky from warm to glowing.

Cadmium Orange Hue occupies the purest orange position in the colour wheel, equidistant between red and yellow, and is the most chromatic orange achievable. This is a colour you cannot mix cleanly from primary colours alone: mixing red and yellow from other tube colours always produces a duller, less saturated result.

Cadmium Orange Hue is fully opaque with high tinting strength. A small amount will significantly shift a mixture toward orange. This opacity makes it excellent for direct, confident mark-making in the warm passages of a painting.

Because of its strong tinting strength, use Cadmium Orange Hue sparingly in mixtures: a small amount goes a long way. It lightens cleanly with Titanium White to peachy salmon, warms toward gold with Cadmium Yellow, and deepens toward warm red with Cadmium Red Hue.

Art Spectrum has manufactured artists' materials at their Epping, Victoria facility for over six decades. Studio Blend Oil is triple-milled in refined linseed oil with ASTM I rated pigments throughout the 26-colour range.

Mixing With Cadmium Orange Hue

Cadmium Orange Hue is most valuable on the palette as the bridge between warm yellow and red. With Cadmium Yellow Hue it gives deep golden yellow; with Cadmium Red Hue it gives rich red-orange. Mixed with Titanium White, the peach and salmon tones it produces are useful in portrait painting for warm, light-value skin passages that warm yellows cannot achieve without going too yellow.

In landscape painting, Cadmium Orange Hue in small amounts can transform the quality of late-afternoon and sunset sky. Mixed into Naples Yellow or a lightened Yellow Ochre, it shifts the sky from warm golden to hot orange-gold without muddying. A very small amount mixed with Alizarin Crimson gives the deep, warm orange-red of a sun setting through haze. Keep the tube on the palette but use it with restraint: its strong tinting strength means a little delivers strong results.

Why use Cadmium Orange Hue instead of mixing orange from red and yellow?

Any orange mixed from red and yellow tubes will be slightly duller and less saturated than a tube orange, because both the red and yellow pigments absorb some of the opposing wavelengths, reducing the overall brightness of the mixture. A tube orange like Cadmium Orange Hue gives the most chromatic, saturated orange possible, which is why it is worth having as a dedicated colour on the palette.

What is the difference between Cadmium Orange Hue and Cadmium Red Hue?

Cadmium Orange Hue is a warm, pure orange sitting between red and yellow. Cadmium Red Hue is a warm, medium red with orange bias but deeper and redder. Orange is used for the warmest, most orange passages; Cadmium Red is used for red and red-orange passages. Together they cover the warm end of the spectrum from golden orange through to warm red.

Is Cadmium Orange Hue safe to use?

Yes. Cadmium Orange Hue uses synthetic organic pigments (not cadmium metal) that are rated ASTM I for lightfastness. Unlike genuine cadmium pigments, hue formulations do not contain heavy metals, which makes them a safer choice for studio use, particularly for painters who are mindful of handling pigments.

Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the direct successor to the Art Prism range with new packaging and artwork only. The formula, pigments, and linseed oil base are unchanged.

Is 40ml enough Cadmium Orange Hue?

For most painters, yes. Because of its high tinting strength, Cadmium Orange Hue is used sparingly and a 40ml tube provides good studio working volume. Only painters who use orange very heavily as a direct coverage colour would need to consider the 150ml tube.
