Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Paint 40ml - Zinc White
Our everyday low price
Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Zinc White 40ml is the gentler, more transparent alternative to Titanium White. Based on PW4 (Zinc Oxide), it has significantly lower tinting strength than Titanium White, a slightly cooler and cleaner tone, and semi-transparency that makes it behave more like a delicate mixing agent than a full covering white. Where Titanium White dominates a mixture and can overwhelm subtle colours, Zinc White gives a softer, more gradual lightening that preserves colour saturation. It is the white of choice for delicate tinting, soft colour transitions, and the most subtle warm-to-light glazing passes in portraiture and still life.
What Makes This Colour Essential
Mixing With Zinc White
Zinc White is most useful as a precision tinting tool where the forcefulness of Titanium White would be counterproductive. In portrait work, the most subtle skin tints for the cool, pale areas of fair skin benefit from Zinc White: the gentle lightening preserves the colour saturation of the skin mix while adding just enough value shift to read as light. In landscape, Zinc White can be used for the very delicate, slightly lighter areas of a sky or water passage where a full Titanium White addition would flatten the passage.
In classical oil painting technique, Zinc White is used in intermediate glaze layers where a touch of white is needed to lighten a layer without making it opaque. Semi-transparent Zinc White applied thinly over a dried darker passage gives the quality of a scumble: a delicate, slightly lighter mist over the underlying colour that softens without erasing. This technique is useful for atmospheric recession in landscape, for the soft quality of candlelight in interior scenes, and for the hazy, diffused light of overcast conditions.
About Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil: Melbourne Made Since 1966
Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the rebrand of the former Art Prism range, with fresh new packaging and artwork. The formula is unchanged: same pigments, same linseed oil base, same manufacturing standards. Made in Epping, Victoria since 1966. The 26-colour range is fully compatible with all Art Spectrum oil mediums and varnishes, and is also available in 150ml tubes.
What is the difference between Zinc White and Titanium White?
Titanium White (PW6) is fully opaque with high tinting strength: bright, covering, and dominant in mixtures. Zinc White (PW4) is semi-transparent with lower tinting strength: gentler, cooler, and more suitable for delicate tinting and soft blending. Use Titanium White for highlights and general mixing; use Zinc White when you need a more subtle, controlled lightening effect.
Is Zinc White the same as Chinese White?
Yes: Zinc White and Chinese White both use PW4 (Zinc Oxide). The name "Chinese White" is most commonly used in watercolour; in oil painting, the same pigment is called Zinc White. The handling characteristics differ between media, but the pigment is the same.
Why is Zinc White useful for portraits?
In portrait painting, the subtle transitions from mid-tone skin to light skin require a white that does not immediately go pale and chalky. Zinc White gives a softer, more gradual lightening that preserves the warm, saturated character of the skin mix while raising its value. The result is more luminous and natural than Titanium White in these delicate passages.
Is Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil the same as Art Prism?
Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the direct successor to the Art Prism range with new packaging and artwork only. The formula, pigments, and linseed oil base are unchanged.
Is Zinc White lightfast?
Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Zinc White carries an ASTM I lightfastness rating. However, note that Zinc White can increase the brittleness of an oil paint film over time if used in large quantities. For thick impasto application, Titanium White is the safer choice.
