Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Paint 40ml - Sap Green
Our everyday low price
Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Sap Green 40ml is a rich, naturalistic, medium-dark yellow-green that sits in the characteristic range of most living foliage: not as bright or cool as a pure phthalo-yellow mix, and not as muted or dark as a viridian mix, but the warm, full, mid-register green of healthy leaves and grasses in direct light. Pre-mixed to a naturalistic foliage tone, it saves significant palette time in landscape and botanical work. Semi-transparent, it works as both a direct painting colour and as a glazing colour for depth in shadow areas of green foliage.
What Makes This Colour Essential
Mixing With Sap Green
Sap Green is most effective as the anchor colour of a foliage palette, with other colours added to adjust warmth, value, and saturation. Lightened with Cadmium Yellow Hue or Lemon Yellow it gives bright, sunlit green. Deepened with French Ultramarine it gives the cool, dark green of shadow foliage. Warmed with Yellow Ochre it gives the dusty, warm green of inland Australian vegetation. Darkened with a small amount of Burnt Sienna it gives the warm, deep brownish-green of heavy shadow under a tree.
In botanical work, Sap Green thinned to a transparent wash over a white ground gives the fresh, luminous quality of thin, translucent young leaves. Applied directly it gives the full, rich tone of mature foliage. For botanical illustration where accurate foliage colour is essential, Sap Green provides the closest pre-mixed starting point to real leaf green of any colour in the range, requiring only minor adjustments for warmth or coolness depending on the species.
About Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil: Melbourne Made Since 1966
Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the rebrand of the former Art Prism range, with fresh new packaging and artwork. What is Sap Green used for in oil painting?
Sap Green is a pre-mixed, naturalistic foliage green used as the primary green in landscape and botanical work. It covers the characteristic tone of most living vegetation: medium-dark, warm, and naturalistic. It saves palette time compared to mixing green from scratch with each use.
Is Sap Green good for Australian landscape?
Yes. The warm, muted character of Sap Green suits Australian eucalyptus and native vegetation better than a bright cool green. With small additions of Yellow Ochre and French Ultramarine it covers the full range of Australian bush foliage from bright sunlit green to deep muted shadow green.
Is Sap Green the same as Phthalo Green?
No. Sap Green is a pre-mixed, naturalistic foliage green: warm, muted, and moderate in intensity. Phthalo Green (Viridian Hue) is a pure cool green with extreme tinting strength and transparency. Sap Green is the more immediately usable landscape colour; Viridian Hue is a specialist transparent mixing and glazing green.
Is Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil the same as Art Prism?
Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the direct successor to the Art Prism range with new packaging and artwork only. The formula, pigments, and linseed oil base are unchanged.
Is Sap Green lightfast?
Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Sap Green carries an ASTM I lightfastness rating, making it suitable for professional fine art use.
