Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil
Cadmium Red Hue 40ml
Warm, opaque medium red. Full chromatic intensity from tube to canvas.

Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Cadmium Red Hue 40ml captures the characteristic warm, medium-red of genuine cadmium red using a modern, lightfast pyrrole red pigment. Fully opaque with high tinting strength and ASTM I lightfastness, Cadmium Red Hue is the warm, versatile red of the Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil range: neither as orange-biased as Cadmium Red Deep, nor as cool and transparent as Alizarin Crimson. It is the red of ripe tomatoes, warm poppy fields, and the strongly saturated colour notes that anchor warm-dominated compositions.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Cadmium Red Hue and Alizarin Crimson are complementary reds that cover both the warm and cool ends of the red range. Cadmium Red Hue is warm, opaque, and orange-biased; Alizarin Crimson is cool, transparent, and blue-violet-biased. For warm reds, orange-reds, and light skin values use Cadmium Red Hue. For shadow glazing, deep cool reds, and violets use Alizarin Crimson. Mixed together they give a full, resonant neutral red. Keep both on the palette.

What Makes This Colour Essential

Warmth
Warm, Orange-Biased Red
Cadmium Red Hue leans toward orange rather than violet, placing it on the warm side of the red family. This warmth makes it ideal for direct red passages where a cool, transparent Alizarin Crimson would give too much violet bias, and for skin tones and flesh work where the warmth reads as life and light.
Opacity
Fully Opaque
Cadmium Red Hue is fully opaque with strong tinting strength. It covers well over any ground and adds warmth powerfully to any mixture. A small amount goes a significant way when mixing.
Mixing
Bridges Red to Orange
Mixed with Cadmium Orange Hue it gives warm red-orange; with Cadmium Yellow Hue it gives warm secondary orange tones. With Titanium White it gives a range of warm pink and rose tones ideal for portrait highlights. With French Ultramarine it gives deep, muted maroon-brown.
Origin
Australian-Made Since 1966
Art Spectrum has manufactured artists' materials at their Epping, Victoria facility for over six decades. Studio Blend Oil is triple-milled in refined linseed oil with ASTM I rated pigments throughout the 26-colour range.

Mixing With Cadmium Red Hue

Cadmium Red Hue is the warm, opaque red at the centre of the palette's warm range. Mixed with Cadmium Yellow Hue it gives warm orange tones; with Cadmium Orange Hue it gives deep red-orange. With Titanium White it produces a range of warm pink, rose, and salmon tones that are particularly valuable in portrait and figurative work for warm highlight values and for the pink tones in fair skin.

With French Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Red Hue gives a deep, muted maroon that is useful as a dark for red-dominant subjects. Because it is a warm, opaque red, it does not mix as clean a violet as Alizarin Crimson does with blue; for violets, Alizarin Crimson and French Ultramarine is the more productive combination. Use Cadmium Red Hue where you want warmth and opacity: for direct red passages, for mixed warm oranges, and for the warm, light-filled quality of sun-lit reds in landscape and still life.

About Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil: Melbourne Made Since 1966

Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the rebrand of the former Art Prism range, with fresh new packaging and artwork. The formula is unchanged: same pigments, same linseed oil base, same manufacturing standards. Made in Epping, Victoria since 1966. The 26-colour range is fully compatible with all Art Spectrum oil mediums and varnishes, and is also available in 150ml tubes.

What is the difference between Cadmium Red Hue and Alizarin Crimson?

Cadmium Red Hue is warm (orange-biased), fully opaque, and has high tinting strength. Alizarin Crimson is cool (blue-violet-biased) and transparent. Cadmium Red Hue is better for warm red passages, skin highlights, and mixing warm oranges. Alizarin Crimson is better for shadow glazing, cool reds, and mixing violets. Most painters keep both.

What is the difference between Cadmium Red Hue and Cadmium Red Deep?

Cadmium Red Hue is a medium, warm red with slight orange bias. Cadmium Red Deep is a deeper, darker version that leans more toward maroon. Cadmium Red Hue is more versatile and lighter in value; Cadmium Red Deep is better for dark red passages and situations where a more saturated deep red is needed.

Is PR254 (Pyrrole Red) a good substitute for genuine cadmium red?

Pyrrole Red (PR254) is a well-regarded modern pigment with excellent lightfastness (ASTM I) and strong, clean colour. It replicates the warm orange-red of cadmium red closely and is the standard hue pigment used across many professional and student-grade ranges. It does not contain cadmium, which makes it a safer studio colour.

Is Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil the same as Art Prism?

Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the direct successor to the Art Prism range with new packaging and artwork only. The formula, pigments, and linseed oil base are unchanged.

Is 40ml enough Cadmium Red Hue?

For most painters, yes. Cadmium Red Hue is primarily used as a mixing colour and for specific red passages, so 40ml provides good studio working volume. Painters who work very large scale or use red as a dominant direct painting colour may want the 150ml tube.
