Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil
Magenta 40ml
Bright, transparent, warm: the essential pink-red for vibrant violet and rose mixing.

Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Magenta 40ml is a bright, warm, transparent pink-red based on PR122 (Quinacridone Magenta), one of the most lightfast and vibrant synthetic organic pigments available. It is the most strongly pink colour in the Studio Blend range: not the cooler, darker crimson of alizarin, and not the muted dusty pink of the Dusty Pink, but a vivid, clear, warm magenta that mixes vibrant violets when combined with blue, and rich, saturated warm pinks when lightened with Titanium White. Fully transparent, it is an excellent glazing colour for bright floral and decorative work.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Magenta is essential for mixing the most vibrant violets in the Studio Blend range. Mixed with French Ultramarine it gives a rich, luminous violet that no other combination in the range can produce as cleanly. Mixed with Phthalo Blue it gives an even more intense, cooler violet. Lightened with Titanium White it gives warm, luminous pinks from hot pink to pale blush. A very small amount added to skin tone mixes gives a flushed, warm pink quality ideal for cheek and lip areas in portraiture.

What Makes This Colour Essential

Vibrancy
The Most Vibrant Pink-Red
PR122 (Quinacridone Magenta) is one of the most vibrant, cleanly saturated pink-reds available. It does not darken or dull the way cadmium-based reds do. In glazing over light grounds it gives luminous, jewel-like pink and rose tones.
Transparency
Fully Transparent
Magenta is fully transparent: used thinly it gives glowing, warm washes of rose and pink. This makes it ideal for layered floral work where petals need depth and luminosity without opacity.
Mixing Range
Violet to Warm Pink
Mixed with French Ultramarine or Phthalo Blue, Magenta gives the most saturated, vibrant violets possible in the Studio Blend range. Mixed with Titanium White it gives a full range from hot pink to pale blush, all retaining warmth and saturation.
Origin
Australian-Made Since 1966
Art Spectrum has manufactured artists' materials at their Epping, Victoria facility for over six decades. Studio Blend Oil is triple-milled in refined linseed oil with ASTM I rated pigments throughout the 26-colour range.

Mixing With Magenta

Magenta is the primary pink in the Studio Blend range and the key to mixing the most vivid violets and warm pinks available. With French Ultramarine it gives warm, luminous violet. With Phthalo Blue it gives a cooler, more intense violet-blue. With Dioxazine Purple a small addition of Magenta shifts the colour toward a brighter, more saturated red-violet. All of these violet mixes are more saturated than any pre-mixed purple achieved by blending a warm red with a blue, because the red and blue components of Magenta and the blues are both clean and non-contaminating.

Thinned with a glazing medium and applied over a dried lighter passage, Magenta gives the deep, warm pink of rose petals with the luminosity that opaque coverage cannot achieve. In sunset sky, Magenta mixed with Cadmium Orange Hue and Titanium White gives the warm, vivid pink-orange tones of a spectacular sunset. In portraiture, a tiny amount of Magenta in a flesh base mix gives the warm, flushed quality of a rosy complexion without looking artificially cosmetic.

About Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil: Melbourne Made Since 1966

Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the rebrand of the former Art Prism range, with fresh new packaging and artwork. The formula is unchanged: same pigments, same linseed oil base, same manufacturing standards. Made in Epping, Victoria since 1966. The 26-colour range is fully compatible with all Art Spectrum oil mediums and varnishes, and is also available in 150ml tubes.

What is the difference between Magenta and Dusty Pink?

Magenta is a fully saturated, bright, transparent warm pink-red straight from the tube. Dusty Pink is pre-muted, semi-opaque, and ready to use as a soft, desaturated pink for portraits and delicate work. Magenta is a mixing colour for vivid violets and warm pinks; Dusty Pink is a convenience colour for soft, restrained pink passages.

Is Magenta the same as Alizarin Crimson?

No. Alizarin Crimson (when a hue version) is typically cooler and darker, with a bluish-red character. Magenta (PR122) is warmer and more pink, sitting between a primary red and a pink. Magenta mixes cleaner, more vivid violets than Alizarin Crimson does. Alizarin Crimson is better for deep, cool, transparent reds and dark warm darks.

Can Magenta be used for Australian landscape?

Yes, selectively. The warm pink and magenta tones in sunrise and sunset sky over the Australian outback, the purple-red of Sturt's Desert Pea, and the vivid pink of bougainvillea in coastal gardens all call for Magenta in the palette. It is not an everyday landscape colour, but it is essential for certain specific effects.

Is Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil the same as Art Prism?

Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the direct successor to the Art Prism range with new packaging and artwork only. The formula, pigments, and linseed oil base are unchanged.

Is Magenta lightfast?

Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Magenta carries an ASTM I lightfastness rating. PR122 (Quinacridone Magenta) is one of the most lightfast synthetic organic pigments available and is widely considered permanent for fine art purposes.
