Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Viridian Hue 40ml is a deep, cool, transparent blue-green based on PG7 (Phthalocyanine Green, Blue Shade). It is the cool, deep, jewel-like green of tropical water, of verdigris and patinated copper, and of the deepest, most saturated greens achievable in oil painting. Fully transparent and extremely high in tinting strength, Viridian Hue is used in small amounts as a glazing colour for depth in shadow areas of green, as a mixing colour for the most intense cool greens and turquoises, and as the dominant colour in seascape and coastal water subjects. Like Phthalo Blue, it must be used sparingly: a tiny amount goes a very long way.

Mixing With Viridian Hue

Viridian Hue is most useful as a specialist glazing and mixing colour rather than as a direct application colour. Glazed thinly over dried lighter green passages in foliage work, it gives the deep, cool, luminous shadow of dense leaves without the grey flatness that adding black to green produces. Mixed with Lemon Yellow it gives the most saturated, brilliant cool emerald available in oil painting. Mixed with Titanium White it gives a range of cool blue-greens from deep teal to pale mint, which is the colour range of shallow tropical Australian water.

In seascape, Viridian Hue is particularly useful for the clear, intense blue-green of tropical water: mixed with Phthalo Blue and a touch of white it gives the colour of the Whitsundays or the Great Barrier Reef in bright sunlight. Mixed with French Ultramarine it gives a deeper, more complex teal for southern coastal water. A touch of Viridian Hue added to a grey sky or overcast sea mix gives the subtle green quality of the Southern Ocean under a grey sky.
