Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Naples Yellow 40ml is the historic warm, muted, buttery yellow that has been a staple of portrait and landscape painting since the eighteenth century. Less bright than Cadmium Yellow Hue and far more opaque than any transparent earth yellow, Naples Yellow is uniquely warm and pre-muted: a golden cream that reads as the natural yellow warmth of sunlight on pale objects, of warm skin highlights, of antique white walls, and of the diffused warm light of a cloudy bright day. It handles beautifully straight from the tube for impasto work and requires minimal mixing to achieve skin tone, warm light, and muted yellow-gold passages.
Naples Yellow is a foundational mixing colour for portrait skin tones. Mixed with Titanium White it gives a warm, pale cream for the lightest highlights on fair skin. With Yellow Ochre it gives a deeper, more golden warm tone. With Burnt Sienna it gives warm, natural mid-tones. In portraiture, a palette of Naples Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Titanium White, and a touch of Cadmium Red Hue or Magenta covers a very wide range of fair-to-medium skin tones without needing many other colours.
In landscape, Naples Yellow is most useful for the warm horizon and sky areas that need golden warmth without the brightness of a primary yellow. Mixed into French Ultramarine and Titanium White for the sky near the horizon, a small amount of Naples Yellow shifts the mix toward a warm, slightly golden haze colour that reads as realistic in Australian light. Applied to foreground areas as part of a sunlit ground mix, it gives the warm, diffused quality of late-afternoon light on dry grass and pale earth.
Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the rebrand of the former Art Prism range, with fresh new packaging and artwork. The formula is unchanged: same pigments, same linseed oil base, same manufacturing standards. Made in Epping, Victoria since 1966. The 26-colour range is fully compatible with all Art Spectrum oil mediums and varnishes, and is also available in 150ml tubes.
Naples Yellow is a pre-muted, opaque warm yellow most useful for portraiture (warm skin highlights and flesh tones), warm sky and atmospheric light near the horizon, and the natural golden warmth of sunlit objects. It is a convenience colour that saves palette time when working with skin tones and warm light.
No. Naples Yellow is warmer, lighter, and more opaque than Yellow Ochre, and it has a creamier, less earthy character. Yellow Ochre is a natural earth pigment with a darker, more distinctly earthy golden-brown tone. Naples Yellow is closer to a warm cream or golden buff; Yellow Ochre reads as a stronger, more orange-brown earth yellow.
Yes, particularly for the warm, diffused light quality of the Australian interior in the afternoon, and for the golden haze of the horizon under a bright, overcast sky. Mixed with Titanium White and a touch of French Ultramarine for the sky near the horizon it gives the warm, atmospheric blue-grey-gold of the Australian inland sky.
Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the direct successor to the Art Prism range with new packaging and artwork only. The formula, pigments, and linseed oil base are unchanged.
Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Naples Yellow carries an ASTM I lightfastness rating, making it suitable for professional fine art work.
