Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil
Cadmium Yellow Deep 40ml
Deep, warm golden yellow. Rich amber-yellow between primary yellow and orange.

Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Cadmium Yellow Deep 40ml is the richest, warmest yellow in the range: a deep, golden, amber-yellow that sits between the primary Cadmium Yellow Hue and the fully orange Cadmium Orange Hue. It is the yellow of warm late-afternoon light, of ripe wheat, of antique gold, and of the amber and honey tones that Cadmium Yellow Hue alone cannot quite reach. Fully opaque and ASTM I lightfast, Cadmium Yellow Deep is the specialist warm yellow for painters who work with the deep, warm colour of old gold, autumn, or the rich warmth of earthy Australian light.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Cadmium Yellow Deep is particularly useful for landscape painters working the warm hour of Australian late-afternoon light. Mixed into Naples Yellow or Titanium White for sky, it gives a richer, deeper golden warmth than Cadmium Yellow Hue. Used directly in the warm areas of a landscape, it gives the deep amber-gold of last light on dry grass, ochre rock, and golden sandstone. It also gives richer, more amber secondary oranges when mixed with Cadmium Red Hue than Cadmium Yellow Hue does.

What Makes This Colour Essential

Depth
Deep, Golden Yellow
Cadmium Yellow Deep is darker and warmer than Cadmium Yellow Hue, sitting closer to orange on the warm spectrum. This gives it the amber, gold, and deep warm yellow qualities that standard primary yellows cannot achieve without losing brightness.
Opacity
Fully Opaque
Like all the cadmium hue colours, Cadmium Yellow Deep is fully opaque with strong tinting strength. It dominates mixtures, so use it in measured amounts.
Mixing
The Warmest Yellow Mixer
Cadmium Yellow Deep produces the warmest, richest orange-yellow tones when mixed with orange or red. With Cadmium Red Hue it gives rich amber-orange. With Titanium White it gives warm honey and cream tones. With blue it gives warmer, more olive greens than Cadmium Yellow Hue.
Origin
Australian-Made Since 1966
Art Spectrum has manufactured artists' materials at their Epping, Victoria facility for over six decades. Studio Blend Oil is triple-milled in refined linseed oil with ASTM I rated pigments throughout the 26-colour range.

Mixing With Cadmium Yellow Deep

Cadmium Yellow Deep produces richer, deeper warm secondary mixtures than Cadmium Yellow Hue. Mixed with Cadmium Red Hue or Cadmium Orange Hue it gives deep, rich amber-orange tones. With French Ultramarine or Phthalo Blue it gives warmer, more olive greens that read as naturalistic, muted yellow-green rather than the brighter, cooler greens that Lemon Yellow produces.

In landscape painting, Cadmium Yellow Deep is the yellow of warm, deep light: late afternoon, autumn, and the golden warmth of dry Australian bush country. Applied directly to dry grass, sandstone, or warm rock, it gives the character of material colour under warm light that Cadmium Yellow Hue is slightly too bright to carry. With Titanium White and a touch of Yellow Ochre it gives a deep, warm amber sky tone for sunset that reads as genuinely golden rather than simply bright yellow.

About Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil: Melbourne Made Since 1966

Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the rebrand of the former Art Prism range, with fresh new packaging and artwork. The formula is unchanged: same pigments, same linseed oil base, same manufacturing standards. Made in Epping, Victoria since 1966. The 26-colour range is fully compatible with all Art Spectrum oil mediums and varnishes, and is also available in 150ml tubes.

What is the difference between Cadmium Yellow Deep and Cadmium Yellow Hue?

Cadmium Yellow Hue is a mid-warm primary yellow, brighter and lighter in value. Cadmium Yellow Deep is deeper, darker, and more orange-biased: a golden amber-yellow rather than a primary yellow. Cadmium Yellow Hue is the more versatile all-purpose primary; Cadmium Yellow Deep is the specialist choice for deeper warm yellow and golden amber passages.

What is the difference between Cadmium Yellow Deep and Cadmium Orange Hue?

Cadmium Yellow Deep is still recognisably a yellow, sitting between mid-warm yellow and orange. Cadmium Orange Hue is fully orange, equidistant between red and yellow. Cadmium Yellow Deep gives warm, golden, amber-yellow; Cadmium Orange gives pure orange. For a full warm spectrum across the range, using Cadmium Yellow Deep between Yellow Hue and Orange fills the amber-gold register.

Is Cadmium Yellow Deep good for Australian landscape painting?

Yes. Australian landscape in the late afternoon, from the golden light on sandstone gorges to the amber of dry grass, calls for a deeper, richer yellow than a primary yellow can deliver cleanly. Cadmium Yellow Deep is the most direct colour for this quality of light. Combined with Yellow Ochre and Burnt Sienna for the earth, and lightened with Titanium White for warm sky, it gives the warm palette of the Australian interior under golden light.

Is Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil the same as Art Prism?

Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the direct successor to the Art Prism range with new packaging and artwork only. The formula, pigments, and linseed oil base are unchanged.

Is 40ml enough Cadmium Yellow Deep?

For most painters, yes. Cadmium Yellow Deep is a specialist warm yellow rather than a heavy-use primary, so 40ml provides good studio working volume. Painters who use it extensively for large-format landscape with warm yellow passages may prefer the 150ml tube.
