A warm, transparent red-brown derived from calcined (heat-treated) natural iron oxide. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Burnt Sienna 40ml is one of the most versatile and widely used colours in oil painting: transparent enough for glazing, warm enough to anchor earthy passages, and fast-drying enough to be used in lean underpainting layers without slowing the painting process. Mixed with French Ultramarine Blue it produces a range of rich, chromatic darks that rival any single dark pigment; used straight from the tube it gives the warm terracotta, rust, and red-clay tones of Australian iron-rich geology.

Burnt Sienna and French Ultramarine Blue are the most productive two-colour dark mixture in oil painting. Mixed together they produce a deep, rich neutral that reads as dark brown, dark grey, or near-black depending on the ratio, and all without the flatness of using Ivory Black directly. Shift the mixture toward Burnt Sienna for warm dark brown; shift toward French Ultramarine for cool dark grey. Both together in equal amounts give a near-black that retains colour interest. Burnt Sienna also dries faster than most oil colours, making it an ideal lean underpainting colour for the first layers of a structured painting.

Calcination (heat treatment) of the raw iron oxide pigment gives Burnt Sienna a faster drying time than most oil colours. This makes it an excellent choice for lean, fast-drying underpainting layers or glazes that the painter wants to dry before adding the next layer. Respect fat-over-lean practice when layering over it.

Mixing With Burnt Sienna

Burnt Sienna's combination of transparency, warm red-brown hue, and faster drying makes it one of the most productive earth colours to have on the palette. With French Ultramarine Blue it creates a remarkably complete range of darks: warm brown through neutral grey to near-black, all without the flat, opaque deadness that tube blacks can introduce. This dark mixture is also transparent, which means it can be used as a shadow glaze over lighter under-painting rather than only as a direct-painting dark.

With Titanium White, Burnt Sienna gives a wide range of warm pink-beige tones essential for portrait work, particularly in the mid-value and light-value skin areas. With Yellow Ochre it produces deep gold tones. With Viridian Hue it gives muted, naturalistic ochre-greens for landscape foliage and bush. Applied full-strength over a light ground, Burnt Sienna's natural transparency and iron-rich colour describes the red-brown earth of the Australian inland, the warm ironstone of gorges and ridgelines, and the terracotta of fired clay.

The formula is unchanged: same pigments, same linseed oil base, same manufacturing standards. Made in Epping, Victoria since 1966. What is the difference between Burnt Sienna and Raw Sienna?

Raw Sienna is the natural, unheated form of the same iron oxide pigment: a warm, transparent golden yellow-brown. Burnt Sienna is the calcined (heat-treated) version: a deeper, redder, more orange-biased brown. Raw Sienna is cooler and more yellow; Burnt Sienna is warmer and more red. Both are transparent, both are fast-drying relative to other oil colours, and both are useful earth tones, but they occupy different parts of the warm-colour range. Many painters keep both.

Why does Burnt Sienna dry faster than other oil colours?

Burnt Sienna's iron oxide pigment (PBr7, calcined) acts as a mild siccative, promoting oxidation of the linseed oil binder and accelerating the drying process. This is a natural property of iron oxide pigments and is why earth colours including Raw Umber, Burnt Sienna, and Yellow Ochre generally dry faster than organic or synthetic pigment colours.

Can I use Burnt Sienna for underpainting?

Yes. Burnt Sienna is one of the most widely used underpainting colours in oil painting. Its transparency allows a warm tonal structure to be established without obliterating the ground, and its faster drying means the underpainting can often be painted over within a day or two. Thinned with odourless mineral spirits or a lean medium (more solvent than oil), Burnt Sienna produces a warm, fluid drawing layer ideal for the initial composition stage.

Is 40ml enough Burnt Sienna for an oil painter?

For most painters, 40ml is a practical working amount. Burnt Sienna is used in relatively thin applications for underpainting and glazing rather than as a heavy, opaque coverage colour, so a tube goes further than its size suggests. Painters who work large-scale with extensive warm underpainting or who use Burnt Sienna frequently as a direct painting colour may prefer the economy of the 150ml tube.
