Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Paint 40ml - Lemon Yellow
Our everyday low price
Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Lemon Yellow 40ml is the coolest, most greenish yellow in the Studio Blend range: a pure, transparent, slightly greenish primary yellow that sits at the opposite end of the warm spectrum from Cadmium Yellow Deep. It is the yellow of fresh spring growth, bright morning light, and the cool yellow of sunlit green leaves where yellow and green are almost indistinguishable. Lemon Yellow is the choice when clean, cool, high-chroma greens are needed: mixed with Phthalo Blue or Cerulean Blue Hue it gives the most saturated, bright greens possible. In Australian landscape, it is the yellow of fresh new growth after rain, of wattle blossom in bright light, and of the cool yellow-green of sunlit native grasses in spring.
What Makes This Colour Essential
Mixing With Lemon Yellow
Lemon Yellow is at its most powerful in green mixing. Mixed with Phthalo Blue, it gives the brightest, most saturated emerald and viridian-type greens achievable in oil painting. Mixed with Cerulean Blue Hue it gives clean, fresh, lighter greens. Both combinations produce results that warm yellows cannot match: the green bias of Lemon Yellow means no warm orange contamination dulls the mixture. Thinned and applied as a wash over a white ground, Lemon Yellow gives a fresh, cool spring light ground for botanical and floral work.
In Australian landscape, Lemon Yellow is most useful in the spring season and for subject matter featuring fresh new growth, wattle blossom, and the bright greens of well-watered coastal vegetation. Mixed with Sap Green it gives a bright, fresh foliage green for spring work. A tiny addition of Lemon Yellow into a grey sky mixture can suggest the cool, diffused quality of morning light without adding warmth. With Titanium White, it gives a pale, fresh, cool yellow for the lightest sky areas on clear cool-weather days.
About Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil: Melbourne Made Since 1966
Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the rebrand of the former Art Prism range, with fresh new packaging and artwork. The formula is unchanged: same pigments, same linseed oil base, same manufacturing standards. Made in Epping, Victoria since 1966. The 26-colour range is fully compatible with all Art Spectrum oil mediums and varnishes, and is also available in 150ml tubes.
What is the difference between Lemon Yellow and Cadmium Yellow Hue?
Lemon Yellow is cooler and more greenish: it has a slight green bias and is fully transparent. Cadmium Yellow Hue is warmer, more primary mid-yellow, and fully opaque. Lemon Yellow is the choice when clean, cool, bright greens are needed from yellow-blue mixing, or when transparent washes of cool yellow light are required. Cadmium Yellow Hue is the general-purpose opaque primary yellow for alla prima and impasto work.
Why is Lemon Yellow important for landscape painting?
In landscape, the difference between a warm and cool yellow in your greens is significant. Warm yellows mixed with blue give muted, olive-toned greens. Lemon Yellow mixed with blue gives clean, fresh, bright greens. For spring foliage, new growth, wattle blossom, and sunlit grass, the cool green that Lemon Yellow produces is far closer to the observed colour than a warm yellow mix.
Is Lemon Yellow good for portrait and figure painting?
Less central than earth colours, but useful in small amounts. A touch of Lemon Yellow in a warm flesh mix gives the quality of cool, bright overhead light on fair skin. It can also contribute to the cool, greenish quality of reflected light from foliage on skin in outdoor portraiture.
Is Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil the same as Art Prism?
Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the direct successor to the Art Prism range with new packaging and artwork only. The formula, pigments, and linseed oil base are unchanged.
Is Lemon Yellow lightfast?
Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Lemon Yellow carries an ASTM I lightfastness rating, making it suitable for professional fine art use. PY3 (Hansa Yellow Light) is a well-established, lightfast synthetic organic pigment.
