Getting the Most Out of This Tube

For a warm amber ground, thin Cadmium Yellow Deep Hue generously with odourless mineral spirits and scrub it across the entire canvas with a wide, stiff brush. Allow it to dry to a very thin, nearly transparent film. This takes 24 to 48 hours. The resulting warm ground shifts all subsequent cool colours toward warmth and gives the painting a coherent, sun-drenched overall tone that is very characteristic of Australian plein air work.

For glazing over dry passages, mix Cadmium Yellow Deep Hue with a small amount of linseed oil and thin as needed. Apply with a wide, soft brush using long, flowing strokes. The glaze works best when the previous layer is fully dry and when the glaze itself is applied very thinly. Multiple thin glazes build more richness than a single thick application.

As a direct painting colour, use this at full consistency for deep golden passages in warm subjects.
