Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Paint 40ml - Raw Sienna
Our everyday low price
Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Raw Sienna 40ml is a warm, transparent, golden amber-yellow earth colour based on PBr7 (natural Raw Sienna iron oxide). It is brighter, more golden, and more transparent than Yellow Ochre, sitting between a transparent warm yellow and a true earth brown. Raw Sienna is one of the most useful glazing colours in the palette: applied thinly over lighter passages it gives the warm, golden, transparent quality of light filtered through autumn leaves, the amber warmth of late-afternoon sun on ochre rock, and the rich, golden undertone of aged wood and stone. As one of the fast-drying earth pigments, it is also an excellent choice for lean underpainting and first layers.
What Makes This Colour Essential
Mixing With Raw Sienna
Raw Sienna is a key member of the earth palette and works in combination with the other earth colours to cover the warm spectrum from golden yellow through amber to deep brown. Mixed with Yellow Ochre it gives a richer, deeper warm golden earth. Mixed with Burnt Sienna it gives a warm, rich amber-orange earth that is useful for autumn foliage and warm rock faces. Mixed with French Ultramarine in varying proportions it gives warm, muted neutral tones from green-brown to dark neutral for landscape shadow.
In Australian landscape, Raw Sienna covers the golden-amber light quality of late afternoon on pale sandstone, on dry grass that has gone beyond yellow into amber, and on the warm face of weathered ochre rock where the light catches it. Glazed thinly over a dried lighter passage, it gives the quality of golden light that direct opaque mixing cannot fully convey. It is also useful as an ingredient in a warm, transparent sky wash near the horizon at sunset, giving the amber warmth of last light without the opacity of cadmium colours.
About Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil: Melbourne Made Since 1966
Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the rebrand of the former Art Prism range, with fresh new packaging and artwork. The formula is unchanged: same pigments, same linseed oil base, same manufacturing standards. Made in Epping, Victoria since 1966. The 26-colour range is fully compatible with all Art Spectrum oil mediums and varnishes, and is also available in 150ml tubes.
What is the difference between Raw Sienna and Yellow Ochre?
Raw Sienna is warmer, more golden, more transparent, and brighter than Yellow Ochre. Yellow Ochre is more opaque and reads as a stronger, deeper, more distinctly earthy golden-brown. Raw Sienna is the transparent glazing earth yellow; Yellow Ochre is the opaque, workable earth yellow for direct painting. Both are useful and they complement each other in the earth palette.
What is the difference between Raw Sienna and Burnt Sienna?
Raw Sienna is the unburned, cooler, more transparent, golden-amber form of the sienna earth. Burnt Sienna is the calcined version: darker, warmer, more orange-brown, and more opaque. Raw Sienna gives the transparent golden tone; Burnt Sienna gives the warm, deep amber-orange. Together they cover the warm amber-to-brown spectrum.
Is Raw Sienna good for Australian landscape painting?
Yes: it is one of the most characteristically Australian earth colours. The warm, golden, transparent amber quality of Raw Sienna covers the mid-afternoon Australian light on ochre and sandstone, the amber of dry coastal heath, and the warm golden underpainting tone that makes Australian landscape glow with warmth even through overlaid greens and blues.
Is Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil the same as Art Prism?
Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the direct successor to the Art Prism range with new packaging and artwork only. The formula, pigments, and linseed oil base are unchanged.
Why does Raw Sienna dry faster than most oil colours?
Raw Sienna is a natural iron oxide (PBr7), and iron oxide pigments contain natural driers that accelerate the drying of linseed oil. This is why earth colours in general dry faster than synthetic organic pigments. For layered painting, this fast dry is an advantage when the first layer needs to be workable quickly.
