Getting the Most Out of This Tube

For portrait skin tones, keep a separate palette area for your warm skin mixture: Cadmium Red Hue, Naples Yellow or Yellow Ochre, and Titanium White. Mix large batches and step them lighter with more white rather than re-mixing repeatedly, which introduces inconsistency. The warm passages of the face should all come from this same core mix, with adjustments for lightness only.

For red florals, apply Cadmium Red Hue thickly in direct light passages and glaze with thinned Alizarin Crimson Hue over dry passages to create shadow depth. The combination reads as a rich, luminous red that is far more interesting than either colour alone. Allow the first layer to dry completely before glazing to avoid lifting.

Because this is an opaque colour, thinning with too much medium will reduce its covering power. For the best results, use it at full consistency from the tube in light-struck passages and reserve thinned application only for small areas of subtle colour adjustment.
