What Makes This Colour Special

The original alizarin crimson (PR83) was notoriously fugitive. It fades with exposure to light, which means paintings made with it change colour over time. Getting the Most Out of This Tube

Alizarin Crimson Hue is at its best in glazing. Over a dried layer of Burnt Sienna, Cadmium Orange Hue, or Naples Yellow, it produces warm-toned shadows with a transparent glow that direct opaque application cannot match. Allow each glaze layer to dry fully before applying the next. Linseed oil or an Art Spectrum glaze medium will extend the working time and improve the flow.

As a strong pigment, use it sparingly in mixes. A small amount shifts a mix significantly toward red or violet. When mixing purples with French Ultramarine, add Alizarin Crimson Hue in small increments and test frequently on a scrap surface before committing to the canvas.

Follow fat over lean: in early layers, thin slightly with odourless mineral spirits. In upper glazing layers, use linseed oil or painting medium to keep the oil film flexible and prevent cracking over time.
