Mixing With Payne's Grey

Payne's Grey is most useful as a darkening agent that retains cool, atmospheric quality. Mixed into French Ultramarine or Phthalo Blue it gives deep, dark cool blue without shifting warm. Mixed into Sap Green or Viridian Hue it gives deep, rich, cool dark green for dense foliage shadow. Mixed with Titanium White it gives a full range of blue-grey tones from near-white cool grey to dark slate, which is the entire tonal palette for an overcast seascape or stormy sky.

In portraiture, a small amount of Payne's Grey in a shadow mix gives the cool, atmospheric quality of shadow on pale skin in cool light without the chalky flatness of a simple black-and-white mixture. For underpainting, Payne's Grey diluted thinly with solvent gives a lean, fast-drying tonal wash that can be overworked wet or dry. This makes it an effective starting point for traditional layered oil painting techniques where tonal structure is established before colour glazes are applied.
