Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Paint 40ml - Dioxazine Purple
Our everyday low price
Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Dioxazine Purple 40ml is the deepest, most powerful violet available in the Studio Blend range. Based on PV23 (Carbazole Violet), it delivers an intense, dark, transparent violet with exceptional depth that no other purple pigment can match. Fully transparent and with one of the highest tinting strengths in the entire palette, Dioxazine Purple can quickly overwhelm a mixture: a small amount goes a very long way. Used correctly, it is the definitive pigment for deep violet shadows, rich purple glazes, and the dark, cool violet-purple tones of twilight, storm cloud, and deep floral colour.
What Makes This Colour Essential
Mixing With Dioxazine Purple
Dioxazine Purple is a mixing colour more than a paint-as-is colour: its extreme darkness and tinting strength make it most effective when mixed with other colours to reach the deep violet, purple, and near-black shadow tones that no other pigment combination gives quite as cleanly. Added to French Ultramarine, it shifts the blue toward a deep, dark violet-blue with extraordinary depth. Added in tiny amounts to Burnt Sienna or Burnt Umber, it creates some of the richest deep darks in the palette, far more interesting than Ivory Black alone.
For floral painting, Dioxazine Purple used transparently over a dried lighter ground gives the deep shadow tones of iris, lavender, and violet petals with the luminous transparency those colours require. In landscape, a touch of Dioxazine Purple in the shadow areas of a blue sky passage gives the very dark upper sky near the zenith that pure blue alone cannot reach. In portraiture, mixed very sparingly with Burnt Umber it gives the cool, dark shadow tone in deep shadow areas of skin without the chalky grey of a simple black mix.
About Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil: Melbourne Made Since 1966
Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the rebrand of the former Art Prism range, with fresh new packaging and artwork. The formula is unchanged: same pigments, same linseed oil base, same manufacturing standards. Made in Epping, Victoria since 1966. The 26-colour range is fully compatible with all Art Spectrum oil mediums and varnishes, and is also available in 150ml tubes.
What makes Dioxazine Purple different from other purples?
Dioxazine Purple is based on PV23, a synthetic organic pigment with a unique transparency and depth that mixed purples (red + blue) cannot achieve. Mixed purples tend to be duller and less intense. PV23 gives clean, luminous, dark violet that retains transparency when glazed. Its tinting strength is also far higher than most pigments, so a tiny amount goes a very long way.
Is Dioxazine Purple lightfast?
Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Dioxazine Purple carries an ASTM I lightfastness rating, making it suitable for professional fine art use where permanence is required.
Can Dioxazine Purple be used to make black?
Not cleanly by itself, but mixed with Burnt Umber or Raw Umber in the right proportions it gives a very deep, nearly neutral dark that reads as a richer, more interesting alternative to a flat black. Many painters prefer this approach to Ivory Black for shadow areas.
Is Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil the same as Art Prism?
Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the direct successor to the Art Prism range with new packaging and artwork only. The formula, pigments, and linseed oil base are unchanged.
How should I use Dioxazine Purple without it overpowering my mixture?
Use a tiny amount and add it slowly. Pick up less than you think you need, mix it into a corner of your palette first, then incorporate that small pre-mixed amount into the larger body of paint. A match-head quantity is usually enough to shift a full palette knife load of another colour.
