Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil
Cadmium Yellow Hue 40ml
Warm, opaque primary yellow. Full strength, high tinting power.

Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Cadmium Yellow Hue 40ml is the warm, opaque, fully saturated yellow of the range. Capturing the characteristic mid-warm yellow of genuine cadmium yellow using modern lightfast pigments, it is the most versatile all-purpose yellow for oil painting: bright enough for direct painting, opaque enough to cover, and warm enough to produce clean secondary oranges with red. ASTM I lightfast throughout. It is the yellow of sunlit gold, of warm summer light, and of the high-key colour notes that anchor warm, light-filled compositions.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Cadmium Yellow Hue is the primary warm yellow of the range and the best choice for mixing clean secondary greens and oranges. With Cadmium Orange or Cadmium Red Hue it gives bright warm oranges. With Phthalo Blue or French Ultramarine it gives a range of greens from bright yellow-green to deeper olive depending on the ratio. Mixed with Titanium White it gives warm, creamy yellow tones for high-key warm passages. Keep it as your main warm yellow and use Lemon Yellow when you need a cooler, more green-biased yellow for bright cool greens.

What Makes This Colour Essential

Warmth
The Primary Warm Yellow
Cadmium Yellow Hue is warm (slightly orange-biased) rather than cool (green-biased). This warm character makes it the natural primary yellow for mixing warm oranges and for painting subjects where a golden, sun-warm yellow quality is needed.
Opacity
Fully Opaque
Cadmium Yellow Hue is fully opaque with strong tinting strength. It covers well over dark grounds and has a powerful effect in mixtures, so add it carefully to avoid over-yellowing a mix.
Mixing
Clean Warm Secondaries
Mixed with blue, Cadmium Yellow Hue gives clear, warm greens. With orange or red it gives warm orange tones. With Titanium White it gives creamy warm yellow. Its warm bias means it gives slightly more orange-leaning greens than the cooler Lemon Yellow, which produces brighter, more acid greens.
Origin
Australian-Made Since 1966
Art Spectrum has manufactured artists' materials at their Epping, Victoria facility for over six decades. Studio Blend Oil is triple-milled in refined linseed oil with ASTM I rated pigments throughout the 26-colour range.

Mixing With Cadmium Yellow Hue

Cadmium Yellow Hue is the warm primary yellow for general use. With French Ultramarine it gives a full range of greens from bright yellow-green to deep olive depending on the ratio of blue to yellow. With Phthalo Blue the greens are brighter and more chromatic. With Cadmium Red Hue or Cadmium Orange Hue it gives warm orange tones, cleanly mixed. With Titanium White it gives a warm cream and then a pale warm yellow, useful for high-key warm passages.

In landscape painting, Cadmium Yellow Hue is the go-to yellow for sunlit field, summer grasses, warm stone, and the golden warm light of afternoon. In still life and floral, it handles sunflowers, daffodils, warm lemons, and butter-yellow passages. Its opacity means it can be used directly over a coloured ground without being affected by what is below it, unlike transparent yellows which can be influenced by the colour beneath.

About Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil: Melbourne Made Since 1966

Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the rebrand of the former Art Prism range, with fresh new packaging and artwork. The formula is unchanged: same pigments, same linseed oil base, same manufacturing standards. Made in Epping, Victoria since 1966. The 26-colour range is fully compatible with all Art Spectrum oil mediums and varnishes, and is also available in 150ml tubes.

What is the difference between Cadmium Yellow Hue and Lemon Yellow?

Cadmium Yellow Hue is warm (orange-biased), opaque, and gives slightly more orange-biased secondary mixtures. Lemon Yellow is cool (green-biased), semi-transparent, and gives brighter, more acid secondary greens. Both are useful: Cadmium Yellow Hue for warm yellows, mixing warm oranges, and coverage; Lemon Yellow for cool, bright greens and high-key cool mixtures.

What is the difference between Cadmium Yellow Hue and Cadmium Yellow Deep?

Cadmium Yellow Hue is a mid-warm yellow. Cadmium Yellow Deep is deeper (more orange, moving toward gold). Cadmium Yellow Hue is the more versatile all-purpose yellow; Cadmium Yellow Deep is the choice when a deeper, more golden or amber-yellow quality is needed.

Are PY83 and PY154 good substitutes for genuine cadmium yellow?

Modern synthetic yellow pigments including Diarylide Yellow (PY83) and Benzimidazolone (PY154) are well-regarded for lightfastness (both are rated ASTM I in the Art Spectrum range) and produce a clean, bright warm yellow close to cadmium yellow's character. They do not contain cadmium, which makes them safer for studio use.

Is Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil the same as Art Prism?

Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the direct successor to the Art Prism range with new packaging and artwork only. The formula, pigments, and linseed oil base are unchanged.

Is 40ml enough Cadmium Yellow Hue?

For most painters, yes. Painters who use yellow heavily for large-scale landscape or floral work may go through yellow faster than other colours, in which case the 150ml tube provides better economy.
