Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil
Cadmium Red Deep 40ml
Deep, dark, opaque red. The most saturated dark red in the range.

Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil Cadmium Red Deep 40ml is the darkest and most deeply saturated red in the range. Where Cadmium Red Hue gives a medium, warm orange-red, Cadmium Red Deep gives a darker, richer red that tends toward the red-maroon end of the spectrum. It is the red of deep roses, dark cherries, and the rich, saturated darks in floral and still life subjects. Fully opaque and ASTM I lightfast, Cadmium Red Deep is the red for painters who work in deeply saturated colour or who need a dark red that retains chroma in shadow.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Cadmium Red Deep is the red for rich, dark floral subjects and for creating deep, saturated red darks in still life. Mixed with a very small amount of Dioxazine Purple or French Ultramarine it gives a deep, chromatic red-purple that captures the shadow side of roses, dahlias, and deep red fruit. It is stronger and darker than Cadmium Red Hue, so use it where you need the darkest, most saturated red passages rather than as a general-purpose warm red.

What Makes This Colour Essential

Depth
The Darkest Red
Cadmium Red Deep is significantly darker in value than Cadmium Red Hue. This deeper value gives it the ability to produce genuinely dark, saturated red passages that cannot be achieved with the lighter Cadmium Red Hue without losing chroma through over-mixing.
Opacity
Fully Opaque
Like Cadmium Red Hue, Cadmium Red Deep is fully opaque with strong tinting strength. It covers well and dominates mixtures, so use it carefully when mixing.
Mixing
Deep Red to Dark Maroon
Mixed with Dioxazine Purple or French Ultramarine, Cadmium Red Deep gives a deep, rich maroon-purple. With Titanium White it lightens toward deep rose and warm pink. With Cadmium Orange Hue it gives warm red-orange. It covers the dark end of the warm red range that Cadmium Red Hue cannot fully reach.
Origin
Australian-Made Since 1966
Art Spectrum has manufactured artists' materials at their Epping, Victoria facility for over six decades. Studio Blend Oil is triple-milled in refined linseed oil with ASTM I rated pigments throughout the 26-colour range.

Mixing With Cadmium Red Deep

Cadmium Red Deep's darker value and richer saturation make it most productive for deep, warm-red passages and for mixing the dark side of the red range. Mixed with Dioxazine Purple it gives a rich, chromatic red-purple that captures the shadow colour of deep red flowers without going muddy. With French Ultramarine it gives a warm, dark maroon that is useful for shadow in red-dominated subjects.

Mixed with Titanium White, Cadmium Red Deep lightens to a deep rose and then a warm pink, giving different tones from Cadmium Red Hue lightened in the same way: the Deep is more saturated and slightly cooler. With a touch of Cadmium Orange Hue or Cadmium Yellow Hue it can be shifted toward a warmer, lighter red. Use it at full strength or with only a small amount of white for the deepest, most chromatic red passages in your work.

About Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil: Melbourne Made Since 1966

Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the rebrand of the former Art Prism range, with fresh new packaging and artwork. The formula is unchanged: same pigments, same linseed oil base, same manufacturing standards. Made in Epping, Victoria since 1966. The 26-colour range is fully compatible with all Art Spectrum oil mediums and varnishes, and is also available in 150ml tubes.

What is the difference between Cadmium Red Deep and Cadmium Red Hue?

Cadmium Red Deep is darker in value and richer in saturation than Cadmium Red Hue. Cadmium Red Hue is a medium, warm orange-red; Cadmium Red Deep is a darker, more deeply saturated red that tends toward maroon. Cadmium Red Hue is more versatile for general red use; Cadmium Red Deep is the specialist choice for dark, richly saturated red passages.

Can I use Cadmium Red Deep instead of Alizarin Crimson for dark reds?

They serve different purposes. Alizarin Crimson is transparent and cool (blue-violet biased), which makes it ideal for glazing and for mixing cool dark reds and violets. Cadmium Red Deep is opaque and warmer, better for direct painting of dark red passages where opacity and warmth are needed. Many painters keep both.

Is Cadmium Red Deep good for painting roses?

Yes. Cadmium Red Deep captures the deep, saturated red of dark roses and similar flowers. For the very darkest shadow passages, mixing it with a small amount of Dioxazine Purple gives a rich, chromatic dark red-purple. For the lighter petals, lightening with Titanium White gives warm rose. For a full floral colour scheme, using Cadmium Red Deep in shadow, Cadmium Red Hue in the mid-value, and a lightened mix with white in the highlights gives a complete tonal range.

Is Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil the same as Art Prism?

Yes. Art Spectrum Studio Blend Oil is the direct successor to the Art Prism range with new packaging and artwork only. The formula, pigments, and linseed oil base are unchanged.

Is 40ml enough Cadmium Red Deep?

For most painters, yes. Cadmium Red Deep is a specialist colour used for specific dark red passages rather than as a general coverage colour, so a 40ml tube provides generous studio working volume.
