What 7mm ruling actually gives you

Line spacing is the thing nobody checks and everybody notices later. At 7mm there is enough clearance that the tails of one line do not tangle with the tops of the next, so a page of fast handwriting still reads back cleanly a month later.

Ruled is the straightforward choice for prose. If most of what goes in the book will be sentences, lines keep it tidy without you having to think about it. At 9 x 14cm you get about twenty words to a line, which is the part people forget to think about until they are living with the book.
