A hard cover notebook 9 x 14cm, which is a little narrower than a true A6, ruled at 7mm, in Cinder. The cover reads as a soft cool grey, the colour of ash once the heat has gone out of it. Inside are 80 sheets of 140gsm acid free paper, roughly double the weight of ordinary notebook stock, which is the reason your pen stays on the page it started on. It clears a jacket pocket, a back pocket and the side sleeve of almost any bag, which is the whole argument for this size.

The colour: Cinder

Cinder is what is left when a fire has burned all the way down. It is the most neutral cover in the range, which is exactly why some people pick it. Nothing about it competes with what you put inside.

What 7mm ruling actually gives you

Plenty of notebooks rule at 6mm, which is why handwriting ends up looking squashed in them. Seven gives it room to breathe without turning the page into mostly empty space, and it is the spacing that suits an italic nib or a brush pen rather than fighting one.

Lines are the right call when the content is words and the order matters. Meeting notes, journals, lecture notes, drafts, lists that have to stay lists. At 9 x 14cm you get about twenty words to a line, which is the part people forget to think about until they are living with the book.

Is 7mm wide ruled or college ruled?

It sits between the two. American college ruled is about 7.1mm and wide ruled about 8.7mm, so 7mm is effectively college ruled, and noticeably roomier than the 6mm a lot of everyday notebooks use.

How wide is the ruling?

Seven millimetres between lines, which is the classic wide-ish rule. Comfortable for adult handwriting, and enough clearance for a broad nib or a brush pen without letters from neighbouring lines tangling.

Is this the same as A6?

Close but not identical. A true A6 is 10.5 x 14.8cm and this is 9 x 14cm, so it is a little narrower and marginally shorter. Worth knowing if you are matching it to an existing cover or slipcase.

Is the paper white or cream?

Slightly cream white. Sakura specifies it that way for legibility, and in practice it means less glare under office and shop lighting than a bright white stock, plus a little more warmth behind coloured inks.

Does it lie flat when you open it?

Not on day one, and no hardcover of this construction does. Open it flat in the middle a few times and work outwards over the first week and it will stay open on a table from then on.
