Mont Marte Dimension Acrylic Premium Van Dyke Brown 75ml Heavy Body Acrylic Paint
Our everyday low price
Van Dyke Brown is the deepest brown in the Dimension Acrylic Premium range, based on a blend of PBr7 and PBk11, arriving at a tone so dark it approaches black in deep shadow passages while retaining warm brown character in thinner applications. Named after the seventeenth-century master Anthony van Dyck, whose paintings feature deep, resonant shadow tones that have become associated with this colour, it is the anchor of the darkest warm passages in any palette. Fully opaque in thick application, it builds rich depth in impasto. In the ultra-thick heavy body formula, it holds knife marks and sculptural texture without slumping. Dries to a gloss finish with a Blue Wool Level 7+ lightfast rating. Available in 75ml tubes and 250ml pots.
What Makes This Colour Essential
Mixing with Van Dyke Brown
Van Dyke Brown is used at or near full strength for the darkest warm passages. Small additions of other colours adjust its warmth and depth without significantly lightening it.
About Mont Marte Dimension Acrylic Premium
Founded in Australia in 2002, Mont Marte creates high-quality fine art materials for students, hobbyists, and professional artists worldwide. Dimension Acrylic Premium is their flagship heavy body range: an ultra-thick, high-viscosity acrylic formulated for impasto work, palette knife painting, and any technique that demands a paint that holds its shape. With a Blue Wool Level 7+ lightfast rating (equivalent to ASTM I), the 48-colour range is built for serious, permanent work. Available in 75ml tubes and 250ml pots.
Is Van Dyke Brown the same as the original historical pigment?
Historical Van Dyck Brown was a natural earth from the Cassel region of Germany, known for poor lightfastness. The modern formulation in Dimension Acrylic Premium uses stable synthetic iron oxide pigments (PBr7, PBk11) to achieve the same deep warm dark tone with permanent, archival quality.
Can I use Dimension Acrylic Van Dyke Brown with a palette knife?
Yes. Palette knife application is one of the primary uses for Dimension Acrylic Premium. The ultra-thick formula sits firm on the knife, deposits a clean hard-edged layer on the surface, and holds the shape of each mark as it dries without slumping. Apply straight from the tube for maximum texture and sharp ridges.
Can Van Dyke Brown replace Lamp Black?
For warm-keyed paintings, Van Dyke Brown can replace Lamp Black in most shadow passages. Its warm bias makes it more naturalistic than black in warm light. For neutral or cool-keyed darks, Lamp Black or Paynes Grey remain the better choices.
How long does Dimension Acrylic Van Dyke Brown take to dry?
Thin applications dry in 20-30 minutes. Heavy impasto builds applied with a palette knife can take 1-2 hours to dry fully. Drying time extends in cold or humid conditions. Do not apply a second thick layer over the first until the lower layer has dried completely to the touch.
What surfaces can I use Dimension Acrylic Van Dyke Brown on?
Canvas, board, wood, air-dry clay, plaster, cardboard, paper, leather, and most rigid plastics. For best adhesion on non-porous or slick surfaces, apply a coat of gesso or acrylic primer first. Dimension Acrylic Premium is compatible with all Mont Marte acrylic mediums, gels, and impasto pastes.
