Square formats are made for daily painting, little still lifes and anything you want to hang in a neat grid. Paint one a day for a month and you will have a wall of work and a lot more confidence.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Paint a small series, not a single piece. Prime four or five 20 x 20cm panels at once and work on them side by side with the same palette. Small squares hung together look far more impressive than one alone, and you learn faster when you can compare.

A rigid wooden panel gives you something a stretched canvas cannot: a firm surface that does not bounce under the brush. That makes it lovely for crisp detail, palette knife work, collage and layered mixed media.

Because the panel comes sanded and unprimed, you choose the ground. A few coats of white gesso give a smooth, bright surface; tinted gesso gives a warm or cool start; clear gesso keeps the beautiful birch grain showing through.

Why We Love the 20 x 20cm Panel

  • Quick wins. Small enough to finish in a single session.
  • Rigid support. No canvas bounce, great for detail and knife work.
  • Your choice of ground. Unprimed, so you decide on white, tinted or clear.
  • Grid friendly. Squares hang beautifully in sets.

How We Prepare a Wooden Panel

Lightly sand, dust off, then brush on two or three thin coats of gesso, sanding gently between coats once each is dry. Use a wide flat from our gesso brushes range and brush each coat in a different direction for an even surface.

Then paint with Art Spectrum oils or acrylic paints, or build up collage and texture. Shop the full range of gesso and primers.

Questions About the Art Spectrum 20 x 20cm Wooden Panel

What is the Art Spectrum wooden panel made from?

Art Spectrum describes its wooden panels as high quality sanded birch wood.

Is the 20 x 20cm panel primed?

No. It is sanded and ready for priming, so you can choose your own ground.

What can I paint on it?

Art Spectrum says its wooden panels suit all mediums. Prime first for oils and acrylics.

What sizes do Art Spectrum wooden panels come in?

Art Spectrum lists square, rectangle and round panels. We stock 20 x 20, 20 x 25, 25 x 30, 30 x 30 and 30 x 40cm, plus 20, 30, 40 and 50cm rounds.

Is a wooden panel better than canvas?

It is different. Wood is rigid, so it is great for detail, knife work and mixed media, while canvas has more spring.

How deep is the panel?

It has a 22mm deep edge, so it sits neatly on a shelf or wall unframed.

Will the panel warp?

The sanded birch surface is warp resistant, so your little squares stay flat and true.

Where can I buy Art Spectrum wooden panels in Australia?

Art Shed Online is an authorised Art Spectrum stockist shipping Australia wide, and the panels are also at our Moorabbin store in Melbourne.
