Lamp Black is the deepest, most neutral black in the Dimension Acrylic Premium range, based on PBk6 (Carbon Black). Fully opaque, high in tinting strength, and neutral in colour bias, it delivers maximum value contrast from the tube and serves as the ultimate darkening colour for any mix where a pure, unbiased dark is required. Used straight in thick impasto, it creates the most dramatic tonal contrast available in the range. In the ultra-thick heavy body formula, it holds palette knife ridges and sculptural marks without slumping. Dries to a gloss finish with a Blue Wool Level 7+ lightfast rating. Available in 75ml tubes and 250ml pots.

Use Lamp Black sparingly in colour mixes: a very small amount darkens quickly and can deaden a mixture. For richer, more atmospheric darks, prefer Paynes Grey or a Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine Blue mix. Reserve Lamp Black for passages that genuinely require maximum value contrast or a neutral, unbiased dark.

Lamp Black is most powerful at or near full strength. In colour mixes, add it sparingly: its high tinting strength means a small amount makes a significant value shift.

Should I use Lamp Black or Paynes Grey for darkening mixes?

Paynes Grey is generally preferred for darkening colour mixes in landscape and portrait work because its cool, chromatic bias preserves more vibrancy than Lamp Black. However, for neutral value studies, monochrome work, and passages where a truly unbiased dark is required, Lamp Black is the correct choice.

Can I use Dimension Acrylic Lamp Black with a palette knife?

Yes. Palette knife application is one of the primary uses for Dimension Acrylic Premium. Is Lamp Black the same as Ivory Black or Mars Black?

No. Lamp Black (PBk6, Carbon Black) is a neutral, very dark black. Ivory Black (PBk9) has a slightly warm, brown-tinged character. Mars Black (PBk11, Iron Oxide) is warmer and slightly transparent. Lamp Black is the most neutral and darkest of the three.

How long does Dimension Acrylic Lamp Black take to dry?

Thin applications dry in 20-30 minutes. Heavy impasto builds applied with a palette knife can take 1-2 hours to dry fully. Drying time extends in cold or humid conditions. Do not apply a second thick layer over the first until the lower layer has dried completely to the touch.

What surfaces can I use Dimension Acrylic Lamp Black on?

Canvas, board, wood, air-dry clay, plaster, cardboard, paper, leather, and most rigid plastics. For best adhesion on non-porous or slick surfaces, apply a coat of gesso or acrylic primer first. Dimension Acrylic Premium is compatible with all Mont Marte acrylic mediums, gels, and impasto pastes.
