How to Use Your Kent Urban Paint Marker

  1. Shake it. Cap on, shake well until the mixing ball rattles freely.
  2. Prime the nib. On scrap paper, press the nib down gently a few times until the paint flows right to the tip. Do not pump it hard.
  3. Pick your end. Bullet for even lines and fills, chisel for handstyles and thick and thin strokes. The nib is reversible, so swap ends whenever you need to.
  4. Test first. Do a few strokes on scrap to check the flow and colour.
  5. Let it dry, then layer. Water based acrylic dries fast. Wait until it is touch dry before an outline, a shine or another colour.
  6. Store flat. Click the cap on firmly and store the marker flat.

Getting the Most From a 6mm Medium Nib

The 6mm is the fill and outline size. Lay the chisel end flat and pull long, overlapping strokes for solid letter fills, then use the bullet end for bold outlines.

Let the first coat dry before adding a second, rather than scrubbing over wet paint. Finish fine details and shines with a 3mm Fine once everything is dry.

Project idea: paint frozen letters on a black canvas: Light Blue fill, Blue shadow, White shines and icicles hanging off the bottom.

Questions About the Kent Urban 6mm Light Blue

What goes with Kent Urban Light Blue?

Blue and White for icy fades, Pink and Lilac for a pastel palette, and Orange or Fluoro Orange when you want strong contrast.

What is the difference between the bullet and chisel nib?

The Kent Urban 6mm Medium has a reversible nib with a bullet tip on one end and a chisel tip on the other. The bullet draws an even, rounded line of about 1.2mm to 3mm. The chisel is flat, so it gives thin and thick strokes from about 0.8mm to 5mm depending on how you turn it, which is perfect for handstyles and lettering.

What surfaces does the Kent Urban 6mm paint marker work on?

Kent Urban uses water based acrylic paint ink that works on wood, metal, glass, plastic, canvas, fabric, stone and most smooth surfaces. On glossy surfaces like glass and shiny plastic, wipe off any grease first, let each layer dry fully, and seal the piece if it will be handled a lot.

How do I start a new Kent Urban paint marker?

Shake it well with the cap on until you hear the mixing ball rattle. Then hold it nib down on scrap paper and press the nib gently a few times until the paint flows right to the tip. Do not pump it hard, or it floods. If it ever runs dry mid piece, cap it, shake it and prime it again.

Can I use Kent Urban paint markers on sneakers?

Yes. Kent lists fabric among the surfaces the range works on, and the acrylic ink grips well on canvas sneakers and smooth leather. Clean the area first, build the colour in light layers, let each layer dry fully, and finish with a clear sealer so your design survives scuffs and wear.

Can I use Kent Urban paint markers outdoors?

Yes. The ink is UV resistant and waterproof once dry, and Kent rates the range for indoor and outdoor use. For anything that lives outside, like a painted deck, a helmet or a piece on a legal wall, a clear outdoor varnish over the top keeps it fresh for longer.

Will Kent Urban paint markers cover black paper?

Yes. The acrylic paint ink is opaque, so it sits on top of black card and dark surfaces instead of soaking in like dye ink. Light colours on very dark backgrounds may need a second coat once the first is dry for full, solid colour.

Where can I buy Kent Urban paint markers in Australia?

We ship fast Australia wide, and our team are artists who use these products themselves, so ask us anything. Kent Urban Light Blue also comes in the 3mm Fine size, and we carry every other Kent Urban nib size too.
