Love a long view? The 100% Cotton Marine Landscape Pad 450 x 150mm.

Small paper, big precision. The Art Spectrum A5 Hot Pressed Cotton Watercolour Pad is the one we hand to people who draw first and paint second. The surface is pressed smooth, so a fine liner glides instead of snagging, and a small round brush can put a petal edge exactly where you meant it to go.

A5 (148 x 210mm) is a pocket sized format that still feels like real paper. It slides into a bag next to a travel palette, sits flat on a cafe table and is quick enough to finish in one sitting. Each of the 15 sheets is 300gsm, 100% cotton, so even a little study gets the same paper you would use for a finished piece.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Hot pressed paper shows every brush mark, so mix more paint than you think you need before you start a wash. Stopping halfway to remix on a smooth sheet leaves a hard line that is almost impossible to hide.

What Is Inside This Little Pad

Fibre
100% Cotton
All cotton fibre, developed with the Magnani paper mill in Italy. Holds water evenly instead of letting it pool.
Surface
Hot Pressed (Smooth)
Pressed between heated rollers for a flat, fine surface. The friend of ink lines, detail and crisp edges.
Weight
300gsm
Thick enough for proper washes on a small sheet without the paper turning floppy in your hand.
Archival
Acid Free · No OBAs
Above pH 7, chlorine free and made without optical brighteners, so the white stays the white you bought.

Why does the surface matter so much at this size? On a small sheet there is nowhere to hide. A rough texture breaks up a fine line, while a smooth surface keeps it clean. That is why sketchers, illustrators and anyone working with a dip pen tend to reach for hot pressed first.

The paper itself is cylinder mould made, sized internally with a plant based size and finished with a synthetic tub size. In plain English, it is sized twice, so paint sits up nicely for glazing and lifting, then sinks in once it settles. Art Spectrum makes the pads in Melbourne.

Why Sketchers Love Hot Pressed A5

  • Lines stay sharp. Fineliners, technical pens and dip pens move cleanly with no fibres catching the nib.
  • Small and serious. Cotton paper in a size you will actually carry every day.
  • Lifts beautifully. The smooth, well sized surface lets you soften an edge or lift a highlight with a damp brush.
  • Vegan friendly. Art Spectrum states the paper is made with a vegan friendly process.

How to Paint on Smooth Paper Without Fighting It

Work wet and commit. Load the brush fully, lay the colour once and let it dry rather than going back in. Hot pressed rewards confidence and punishes fiddling. For pen and wash, draw with a waterproof ink first, let it cure, then add colour on top.

If you are building a small travel kit, pair this pad with a compact palette from our watercolour paint sets and a waterbrush or small round from our watercolour brushes. That is the whole studio, in one pocket.

Questions About the Art Spectrum A5 Hot Pressed Cotton Watercolour Pad

What is hot pressed watercolour paper best for?

Hot pressed paper is best for detail. Its smooth surface suits botanical illustration, pen and wash, portraits, lettering and anything where crisp edges matter more than texture. It is less forgiving for big loose washes, which can dry with visible blooms.

Is A5 big enough for a finished painting?

Yes. Plenty of artists sell and gift A5 originals, and they fit standard small frames. A5 is also the ideal size for colour studies and thumbnail versions of bigger paintings, so you can test an idea before committing a larger sheet.

Can I use pen and ink on this paper?

Absolutely, it is one of the best surfaces for it. Use a waterproof pigment ink if you plan to paint over your lines, and let the ink dry fully before any water touches it.

What does mould made watercolour paper mean?

Mould made paper is formed on a slowly turning cylinder mould, a traditional method that lays the fibres in a more random, felted way than fast machine paper. The result is a stronger, more stable sheet that handles water better.

Is Art Spectrum cotton watercolour paper vegan?

Art Spectrum describes the manufacturing process for this 100% cotton paper as vegan friendly, using plant based internal sizing rather than animal gelatine.

Why do my washes look streaky on hot pressed paper?

Smooth paper absorbs a little more slowly at the surface, so pigment can dry where it lands. Wet the area first, tilt the pad slightly and keep a bead of paint moving down the page. Mixing enough paint in advance helps too.

Where can I buy Art Spectrum hot pressed watercolour paper in Australia?
