If you only ever buy one watercolour pad, make it this one. The Art Spectrum A4 Cold Pressed Cotton Watercolour Pad is the do everything choice: 15 sheets of 100% cotton at 300gsm with a medium texture that suits landscapes, florals, still life and loose abstract work.

A4 (210 x 297mm) is the size most watercolour teachers put on a supply list, and for good reason. It gives you room to move a big brush while still finishing a painting in one class.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Bringing this pad to a class? Pre tape the first sheet onto a light board at home with low tack tape. You will start painting while everyone else is still wrestling with a roll of tape.

Why It Works for Almost Everything

Cold Pressed (Medium)
The middle texture. Catches granulation, holds a crisp edge and smooths a gradient.

Heavy enough for wet in wet without the sheet giving up.
Archival
Museum Grade
Acid free above pH 7, chlorine free and made with no optical brighteners.

Cold pressed is the surface most painters settle on because it does not force a style on you. Paint tight and it holds the line. Paint loose and it gives granulating colours a lovely speckle. Drag a dry brush across it and you get sparkle on water. It is the most versatile of the three surfaces Art Spectrum makes.

The paper behind it was developed with the Magnani mill in Italy, cylinder mould made and sized twice, then made up into pads in Melbourne. Need more sheets for regular practice? The same size is also available as a 50 sheet cold pressed pad in our watercolour paper range.

Why Teachers Put It on the Supply List

  • One pad, every subject. Landscapes, flowers, animals and abstracts all work on cold pressed.
  • Forgiving for learners. The texture softens small mistakes in a wash.
  • Real artist quality. 100% cotton gives students results they can be proud of.
  • Easy to frame. A4 fits standard frames and mats with no trimming.

Techniques That Shine on Cold Pressed

Try a graded wash: wet the top of the sheet, lay a strong colour along the top, then add water to the brush with each stroke as you work down. On cotton cold pressed it fades smoothly. For texture, sprinkle a little salt into a damp wash and brush it off once dry.

Cold pressed also loves granulating pigments. Pick a few from our watercolour paints and see how they settle into the tooth of the paper.

Questions About the Art Spectrum A4 Cold Pressed Cotton Watercolour Pad

What is the difference between cold pressed and rough watercolour paper?

Cold pressed has a moderate tooth that suits almost every subject. Rough has a much bolder texture that breaks up brushstrokes and exaggerates granulation. Choose cold pressed for versatility, rough for drama and texture.

Should I buy a 15 sheet or a 50 sheet pad?

A 15 sheet pad is perfect for trying the paper, for classes and for occasional painting. If you paint most weeks, a 50 sheet pad means fewer reorders. Both use 300gsm, 100% cotton paper.

Can I use masking fluid on cold pressed paper?

Yes. Make sure the paper is completely dry before you apply it and before you remove it, and do not leave it on for weeks. Rub it off gently to avoid lifting the surface.

Will 300gsm paper buckle when I paint?

All watercolour paper moves a little when it is very wet. At 300gsm, cotton paper recovers well. For heavy washes, tape the sheet on all four sides to a board and let it dry flat before removing the tape.

Do I need artist quality paint to use this paper?

No, but you will notice the difference. Good paper improves any paint, and cotton paper is often a bigger upgrade than more expensive paint. Many teachers suggest buying better paper first.

Is this a good pad for a watercolour class?

It is one of the most common supply list items. Cold pressed 300gsm cotton in A4 suits nearly every beginner and intermediate class, and the pad keeps sheets flat in transit.
