100% Cotton Watercolour Pad
A4 (210 x 297mm) · 300gsm (140lb) · 50 sheets · Cold pressed
Also in A3. Same paper, bigger playground. Find the whole family in our watercolour paper range.

Here is the truth nobody tells beginners. Half of what people blame on their painting is actually their paper. Cheap paper fights you. Washes go blotchy, colour sits on top and dies, and the moment you try to lift a mistake the surface turns to fluff. The Art Spectrum 100% Cotton Watercolour Pad is the fix. Fifty sheets of A4, 300gsm, all cotton, from Art Spectrum, the Australian brand behind some of the country's best loved artists' materials. Paint wet, paint loose, paint badly on purpose. This paper can take it.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Flip a sheet over before you start. One side has a vertical texture and the reverse has an even, non-linear texture. The vertical side gives skies and water a lovely directional sparkle. The even side is calmer for botanicals and detail. Two papers in one pad, and most people never notice.

What Makes This Paper Special

Fibre
100% Cotton
No wood pulp blend. Cotton fibres soak up water evenly, so washes settle smoothly and colour stays bright as it dries.
Weight
300gsm (140lb)
The standard weight working watercolourists rely on. Heavy enough for generous washes without the paper giving up halfway.
Surface
Cold Pressed
The all-rounder texture. Enough tooth for granulation and dry brush, smooth enough for detail.
Credentials
Acid Free · FSC Certified
Acid free so your work will not yellow and go brittle. FSC certified cotton paper from responsibly managed sources.

Why cotton? Because watercolour is a water sport. Cotton fibres are long and strong, so the sheet holds a flood of water, lets pigment sink in rather than skate on top, and survives being scrubbed, lifted and reworked. Wood pulp papers are cheaper for a reason. They pill, they stain unevenly and they make your colours look tired. Once you paint on cotton, going back feels like painting on a paper towel.

Fifty sheets is the other magic number here. Most cotton pads give you 12 or 15 sheets, which is exactly enough to be too precious to practise on. A 50 sheet pad changes the maths in your head. You can do the warm-up, the colour test, the one that went wrong and the one that finally worked, all on proper paper.

Why Watercolourists Rate Art Spectrum

  • A genuine Australian brand. Art Spectrum is an Australian name trusted by painters, art schools and studios across the country.
  • All cotton, not a cotton blend. Always check the percentage on a watercolour pad. This one is 100%.
  • Two textures in every sheet. Vertical texture on one side, an even texture on the other. Choose the surface to suit the subject.
  • Built to last. Acid free, so finished paintings stay fresh for framing, gifting or selling.
  • Friendly with everything wet. Watercolour, gouache, ink and watercolour pencil all behave beautifully on it.

Getting the Most Out of This Pad

For loose sketches and light washes, paint straight on the pad. For big, juicy wet-in-wet work, remove the sheet and tape all four edges to a board with gummed tape or low-tack painter's tape. Let it dry flat before you peel the tape and you will get a crisp white border and a flatter finished painting.

Want to lift colour back to white? Cotton is forgiving. Wait until the paint is just damp, then lift with a clean, thirsty brush or a tissue. For harder edges, rewet with clean water and blot. Pair the pad with a good soft-hair brush from our watercolour brush range and you have the whole kit for serious practice.

Questions About the Art Spectrum 100% Cotton Watercolour Pad

Is the Art Spectrum watercolour pad really 100% cotton?

Yes. This pad is 100% cotton paper, not a cotton and wood pulp blend. That matters because cotton absorbs water evenly, survives lifting and scrubbing, and keeps colours brighter as they dry. If a pad does not state the cotton percentage, assume it is lower.

Is 300gsm watercolour paper heavy enough?

300gsm (140lb) is the standard weight most professional watercolourists use. It handles generous washes well. All paper moves a little when it gets very wet, so for heavy wet-in-wet work tape the sheet down on all four edges and it will dry much flatter.

What is the difference between cold pressed, hot pressed and rough watercolour paper?

Cold pressed has a gentle tooth and is the most versatile, great for most subjects and skill levels. Hot pressed is smooth, ideal for fine detail and botanical work. Rough has a pronounced texture that makes granulating colours and dry brush effects sing. If you are only buying one, buy cold pressed.

Which side of the paper should I paint on?

Both. One side has a vertical texture and the reverse has an even, non-linear texture. The vertical side adds movement to skies, water and grasses. The even side suits detail, portraits and botanicals. Try a stroke on each side and pick the one that suits your subject.

Can I use gouache, ink or watercolour pencils on this pad?

Absolutely. Any water-based medium works beautifully on 100% cotton 300gsm paper, including gouache, acrylic ink, drawing ink and watercolour pencils. It also takes graphite well for under-drawings, just keep it light so the lines do not show through your washes.

Is this watercolour paper acid free and archival?

Yes, it is acid free, which means it will not yellow or turn brittle with age the way acidic papers do. It is also FSC certified, so the paper comes from responsibly managed sources. A good choice for work you plan to frame, gift or sell.

Should I choose a 50 sheet pad or a 15 sheet pad?

If you paint regularly, go for 50. You get more than three times the sheets of a standard 15 sheet cotton pad, which means you can practise, test colours and make mistakes on proper paper instead of saving it for best. Smaller pads suit occasional painters and travel.
