A3 (297 x 420mm) gives a warm mid tone real presence. Framed, a sand toned charcoal drawing looks finished and deliberate in a way white paper rarely does.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
For a life drawing class, take Sand A3 and only three sticks: black charcoal, white chalk and one warm sanguine pastel. Limiting the materials forces you to think about light, and the results look far more polished than a full box ever would.

Copying an old master drawing is one of the best exercises there is, and most of those drawings were made on warm, tinted paper with red chalk, black chalk and white. Sand A3 lets you work the same way at a similar scale, which teaches you more about light than any tutorial.

In class, a warm sheet also saves time. Instead of spending a long pose shading in mid tones, you go straight to the shadows and highlights. Add a handful of soft pastels and some charcoal and you are set.

Why Sand A3 Looks So Good Framed

  • Instant atmosphere. The warm ground makes simple drawings feel complete.
  • Classic technique. Perfect for trois crayons drawing in black, white and red.
  • Space to work. Large sheets for big gestures and life size studies.
  • Heavy and stable. 250gsm stays firm on the easel.

Drawing Big on Sand

Block in the large shadow shapes first with the side of a charcoal stick, then refine edges. Keep white for the final ten minutes of a pose. Let plenty of paper show through, because that warm mid tone is what makes the drawing glow.

Store finished sheets flat with a clean sheet over the top, and fix them before framing so charcoal and chalk stay crisp.

Questions About the Art Spectrum A3 Sand Toned Pad

What is trois crayons drawing?

Trois crayons, or three chalks, is a traditional technique using black, white and red chalk on a mid tone paper. A warm ground like Sand is ideal because the paper becomes the middle value.

Is Sand toned paper good for life drawing?

Yes. The warm tone suits skin and makes quick poses look finished with just a few marks of charcoal and white chalk.

Why draw on toned paper instead of white?

On toned paper you can add highlights as well as shadows, so forms look rounded faster. It also stops the glare of a bright white sheet and gives drawings a unified feel.

Will white chalk show up on Sand?

Yes, clearly. White reads strongly against the warm mid tone, which is why Sand is a favourite for highlight work.

Is the paper heavy enough for an easel?

At 250gsm, yes. The sheets are firm and sit well on an easel or drawing board, especially if you clip or tape the corners.

Is the paper archival?

It is acid free, which means it will not yellow or become brittle over time, and it is FSC certified and carbon neutral.
