A hard cover notebook 21 x 30cm, effectively A4, ruled at 7mm, in Amber. The cover reads as a warm golden brown, the colour of resin held up to a window. Inside are 80 sheets of 140gsm acid free paper, roughly double the weight of ordinary notebook stock, which is the reason your pen stays on the page it started on. This is a desk and studio size. It will go in a bag, but it is not pretending to be pocketable, and the trade is that you get a full page to think on.

The colour: Amber

Amber is fossilised tree resin, sap that kept flowing long enough to outlast the tree it came from. Japan has recorded that exact warmth as kohaku-iro for centuries, and it sits in the same family as the ochres and raw siennas you already have in your paint drawer.

What 7mm ruling actually gives you

Line spacing is the thing nobody checks and everybody notices later. At 7mm there is enough clearance that the tails of one line do not tangle with the tops of the next, so a page of fast handwriting still reads back cleanly a month later.

Lines are the right call when the content is words and the order matters. Meeting notes, journals, lecture notes, drafts, lists that have to stay lists. At 21 x 30cm you get a diagram and its notes side by side, which is the part people forget to think about until they are living with the book.

Is there a margin printed on the page?

No printed margin, just clean full-width ruling edge to edge. If you want a margin you rule your own, which is the flexible way round.

Can I still sketch in a ruled notebook?

You can, and plenty of people do, but if drawing is more than an occasional thing the dot grid version is the better buy. Lines are hard to ignore behind a drawing in a way that dots are not.

Is this actually A4?

Effectively yes, at 21 x 30cm against a true A4 of 21 x 29.7cm. It will sit in an A4 sleeve or folder without trouble.

Does it lie flat when you open it?

Not on day one, and no hardcover of this construction does. Open it flat in the middle a few times and work outwards over the first week and it will stay open on a table from then on.

What is in the back pocket for?

It is an expandable gusseted pocket bound into the inside back cover, meant for loose notes. In practice people use it for receipts, business cards, postcards, swatch cards and the scraps of paper they would otherwise lose.
