Every ready made paint box is somebody else's idea of what you paint with. Twelve colours you did not choose, three brushes you will not use, and a fixed tray layout designed around the set rather than around you. Six months later the colours are gone, the layout is wrong, and you are carrying a box that no longer fits how you work.

The Mabef M112 solves that by being empty. Oiled Italian beech, 41 by 27cm inside, with adjustable dividers you set to your own kit. A wooden palette is included. Everything else is your decision, which is how it should be.

It is the largest plain box in the Mabef range, and at 2.2kg it is solid rather than light, which is the point. This is the box you hand to someone in twenty years.

We stock the lot, so here is the plain version. The M112 is the big empty one, for storage and carrying. The M100 to M103 are the deluxe sketch boxes, tin lined with metal dividers and sliding canvas supports so they hold a wet panel while you paint. The M105 is a pochade box, a complete portable painting station that mounts on a tripod.

Put simply: buy the M112 if you want to carry your kit somewhere. Buy an M100 series box if you want to paint out of the box itself. Buy the M105 if you want to paint standing in a field.
