Primary Magenta  #190 · Series A
Approximate screen rendering, converted from Holbein’s published Munsell notation 8RP 4/13.5. Screen calibration varies.

Primary Magenta is one of the process-style primaries, and it is a single-pigment colour: PR122, which Holbein lists as a Quinacridone. Munsell notation of 8RP 4/13.5 puts it in the red-purple range, with a value of 4 that keeps it deep and a chroma of 13.5 that is very high indeed. In practice that means a clean, cold, intense pink-crimson with none of the orange bias a warm red carries. Three stars for lightfastness.

If you mix by a printing-style primary scheme, this is your magenta and it is a genuinely good one. Quinacridones are famously clean mixers, so with Primary Yellow you get oranges and warm reds that stay bright, and with Primary Cyan you get violets and purples that do not slump into grey. Designers, illustrators and animators use the primary set to build a whole palette from few tubes with predictable results. On its own it is a superb colour for bougainvillea, jacaranda, silk, lit signage and any flat graphic work that needs a cold pink carrying real weight.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Add this to white rather than white to this. At chroma 13.5 it is potent, and going the other way you will overshoot your pink three times before you land it.

Acrylic Gouache, Not Traditional Gouache

Acrylic gouache is a hybrid by design: the dense matte surface of gouache, carried in an acrylic emulsion so the dried film holds up. It thins with water and needs no medium. Holbein Acrylic Gouache dries to a matte opaque finish and is water resistant once dry, so it does not reactivate with water like traditional gouache. For a high-chroma colour like Primary Magenta that means flats stay even and can be overpainted or masked without lifting. It layers cleanly with other media, so it earns a place in a mixed media pad.

Why Holbein Acrylic Gouache Is in Serious Studios

  • Genuinely opaque. Holbein describes the range simply as an opaque acrylic paint. It covers, including over darker colour, which is the whole point of reaching for gouache rather than watercolour.
  • Velvety matte, no sheen. Holbein describes the colour as opaque, intense, smooth and velvety. It dries flat, which is why it photographs and scans without glare.
  • Water resistant once dry, so you can layer. Holbein’s own wording, and the reason the range exists. A dry layer will take another one over the top without lifting.
  • The colour you mix is the colour you get. Holbein states it does not shift in colour tone from wet to dried colour. Anyone who has watched a perfect grey dry into a different grey will appreciate that.
  • Built to use straight from the tube. Holbein says it is specifically designed to be used directly from the tube and will dry to even, uniform paint layers.
  • Works on more than paper. Holbein lists paper, canvas, cloth, stone, wood, leather, plexiglass and concrete, with excellent adhesion, and full compatibility with all acrylic mediums.

Getting the Most Out of This Tube

Straight from the tube is the default. This is what Holbein designed it for, and it is where you get those even, flat, uniform layers. Add a little water to loosen it, but go easy: very diluted washes can dry streaky across a large flat area, so build coverage in thin even coats rather than flooding it on.

Watch the palette, not the clock. Holbein gives an open time of roughly 10 to 30 minutes and notes the drying time is much like ordinary watercolour. The practical consequence is that paint left sitting on the palette will go off and will not come back, so squeeze out small amounts as you need them.

It plays well with acrylic mediums. Holbein states the range is compatible with all acrylic mediums, so you can change the body or extend the working time if you want to. Soft synthetic brushes suit it, since they hold enough paint to lay a flat area without dragging.

Questions About Holbein Primary Magenta

What is the difference between Primary Magenta and Magenta?

Primary Magenta is designed as one leg of a printing-style primary set, so its job is to mix cleanly with the matching yellow and cyan. At 8RP with a chroma of 13.5 it sits high and cold in the red-purples. The standard Magenta in the range is chosen to look right on its own rather than to sit inside a mixing system. Buy this one if you mix by primaries.

Why choose a primary set over buying individual colours?

Predictability, mostly. Three well-chosen primaries plus a white and a black mix an enormous range, and because each one here is either single pigment or close to it, the results stay clean instead of turning muddy. It is a sensible way to learn colour properly, and a practical palette for design work where colours need to be reproducible.

Does Holbein Acrylic Gouache reactivate with water once dry?

No. Holbein describes it as water resistant once dry, specifically so you can paint layer upon layer, which is the main practical difference from traditional gum arabic gouache. Note that Holbein says water resistant rather than waterproof, and very thin, heavily diluted passages can still be disturbed if you scrub at them with a wet brush.
