Light Red Bright is not an earth colour, despite the traditional name. Holbein builds it from PR9 and PY3, both listed as Monoazo Pigments, so it is an organic red warmed with a yellow rather than an iron oxide. Munsell puts it at 8.0R 4.5/9.5: the hue sits at the warm, orange-leaning end of red, the value of 4.5 keeps it mid-depth, and a chroma of 9.5 is strong without being strident. Expect a clean, slightly brick-toned red. Two stars for lightfastness.

It behaves like a brighter stand-in for the traditional earth reds, which makes it useful for roof tiles, terracotta, brickwork, weathered timber and skin tones that need warmth without dropping into brown. Illustrators use it as the warm red in a limited palette, because the built-in yellow means it moves towards orange with very little help. With Titanium White it gives a long ladder of dusty salmons and adobe pinks, and a touch of Ash Blue knocks the chroma back for shadow without the deadness black brings. Model makers like it for rust and oxide finishes.

Acrylic Gouache, Not Traditional Gouache

Acrylic gouache is a hybrid: the pigment load and flat finish of gouache, carried in an acrylic emulsion instead of gum arabic. Holbein Acrylic Gouache dries to a matte opaque finish and is water resistant once dry, so it does not reactivate with water like traditional gouache. For a strong warm red like Light Red Bright that means you can lay a flat, then draw, glaze or overpaint on top of it without the underlayer moving. Water is the only thinner needed. Poster paint and this are different animals. Poster colour is built to be cheap, chalky and washable, so it lifts if anything damp lands on it. Light Red Bright is pigment in an acrylic emulsion, so the film locks down and the colour you mixed is the colour that stays there.

Getting the Most Out of This Tube

Straight from the tube is the default. This is what Holbein designed it for, and it is where you get those even, flat, uniform layers. Add a little water to loosen it, but go easy: very diluted washes can dry streaky across a large flat area, so build coverage in thin even coats rather than flooding it on.

Watch the palette, not the clock. Holbein gives an open time of roughly 10 to 30 minutes and notes the drying time is much like ordinary watercolour. The practical consequence is that paint left sitting on the palette will go off and will not come back, so squeeze out small amounts as you need them.

It plays well with acrylic mediums. Holbein states the range is compatible with all acrylic mediums, so you can change the body or extend the working time if you want to. Soft synthetic brushes suit it, since they hold enough paint to lay a flat area without dragging.
