Shell Pink  #11 · Series A
Approximate screen rendering, converted from Holbein’s published Munsell notation 7.0R 8.5/4.5. Screen calibration varies.

Shell Pink is a tint through and through: PR9 as a Monoazo Pigment, PO36 as a Benzimidazolone, and a good deal of PW6 Titanium Dioxide. Munsell notation of 7.0R 8.5/4.5 says the rest. A value of 8.5 is very light and a chroma of 4.5 is low, so what you get is a pale, gentle blush with a warm 7.0R bias, closer to the inside of a shell than to a bright pink. Two stars for lightfastness.

Pale warm pinks are the quiet workhorses of illustration, and this one has a genuinely useful cast. It stands in for skin, plaster, faded fabric, sand and flesh-toned architecture, and it works as a warm near-white in a high-key palette. Portrait illustrators use it as the base coat before deeper notes go over the top. It also makes a lovely ground for coloured pencil or ink line, since the surface stays matte. Push it with Yellow Ochre for sandstone or Burnt Sienna for a deeper flesh note.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Lay it down as your ground and work on top once it is dry. Because it stays matte, pencil and ink lines bite straight into it, which makes it a great base for line-and-wash portraits.

Acrylic Gouache, Not Traditional Gouache

Holbein Acrylic Gouache was designed around flat colour: illustration, animation backgrounds, graphic work, model finishing. Pigment in an acrylic emulsion, thinned with water, no medium required. Holbein Acrylic Gouache dries to a matte opaque finish and is water resistant once dry, so it does not reactivate with water the way traditional gouache does. That is what lets a pale ground colour like Shell Pink hold its ground while you draw and paint over the top of it. Compare it with the other options in our gouache range.

Poster paint is designed for volume, quick coverage and washing out of school shirts, so the pigment load is modest and the surface stays vulnerable. Shell Pink is a proper pigment-in-acrylic paint with published pigment codes and a lightfastness rating, and it dries permanent. Same flat matte look, a very different animal underneath.

Why Holbein Acrylic Gouache Is in Serious Studios

  • Genuinely opaque. Holbein describes the range simply as an opaque acrylic paint. It covers, including over darker colour, which is the whole point of reaching for gouache rather than watercolour.
  • Velvety matte, no sheen. Holbein describes the colour as opaque, intense, smooth and velvety. It dries flat, which is why it photographs and scans without glare.
  • Water resistant once dry, so you can layer. Holbein’s own wording, and the reason the range exists. A dry layer will take another one over the top without lifting.
  • The colour you mix is the colour you get. Holbein states it does not shift in colour tone from wet to dried colour. Anyone who has watched a perfect grey dry into a different grey will appreciate that.
  • Built to use straight from the tube. Holbein says it is specifically designed to be used directly from the tube and will dry to even, uniform paint layers.
  • Works on more than paper. Holbein lists paper, canvas, cloth, stone, wood, leather, plexiglass and concrete, with excellent adhesion, and full compatibility with all acrylic mediums.

Getting the Most Out of This Tube

Straight from the tube is the default. This is what Holbein designed it for, and it is where you get those even, flat, uniform layers. Add a little water to loosen it, but go easy: very diluted washes can dry streaky across a large flat area, so build coverage in thin even coats rather than flooding it on.

Watch the palette, not the clock. Holbein gives an open time of roughly 10 to 30 minutes and notes the drying time is much like ordinary watercolour. The practical consequence is that paint left sitting on the palette will go off and will not come back, so squeeze out small amounts as you need them.

It plays well with acrylic mediums. Holbein states the range is compatible with all acrylic mediums, so you can change the body or extend the working time if you want to. Soft synthetic brushes suit it, since they hold enough paint to lay a flat area without dragging.

Questions About Holbein Shell Pink

Is Shell Pink warm or cool?

Warm. The hue sits at 7.0R, which is on the orange side of red, and PO36 in the blend reinforces that. It is the natural partner to Pale Peach rather than to Pale Pink, which Holbein places at 8.0RP on the cool side. If your palette needs a blush that will not fight your earths, this is the one.

Why does it look so muted compared with the other pinks?

Because of chroma. At 4.5 it is one of the least saturated colours in this batch, and that is the titanium white doing its job. Low chroma is not a weakness here, it is the reason the colour can sit behind and beneath brighter notes without competing with them.

Does Holbein Acrylic Gouache reactivate with water once dry?

No. Holbein describes it as water resistant once dry, specifically so you can paint layer upon layer, which is the main practical difference from traditional gum arabic gouache. Note that Holbein says water resistant rather than waterproof, and very thin, heavily diluted passages can still be disturbed if you scrub at them with a wet brush.
