Cosmos Pink is a three-pigment blend: PR122, listed as a Quinacridone Pigment, PR146, a Monoazo Pigment, and PW6 Titanium Dioxide. That white in the mix makes it a tint, which is exactly why it looks soft rather than fierce. Munsell notation of 4.0RP 5.5/11.0 puts it at a mid value with real chroma still present, and the RP hue keeps it on the cool, rose-purple side of pink. Two stars for lightfastness.
This is the pink people keep coming back for, because it is a mid-tone pink you can actually build with rather than a pastel you have to prop up. Quinacridone underneath gives it a clean rosy bias, so it works for cosmos and peony petals, sunset cloud, fabric, wallpaper pattern and mid-value skin in stylised portrait work. Illustrators use it as the base note between Pale Pink and Rose Violet. Take it towards Lilac for a soft mauve, or add a whisper of Burnt Umber for the greyed-off rose that makes surrounding colours look richer than they are.
What Makes This Colour Special
Pigment, lightfastness and series as published by Holbein. Holbein does not publish an opacity rating for individual colours; the range as a whole is described by Holbein as opaque.
Acrylic Gouache, Not Traditional Gouache
Acrylic gouache splits the difference between two paints people usually have to choose between. It gives the chalk-flat matte surface of gouache with the permanence of an acrylic film. Holbein Acrylic Gouache dries to a matte opaque finish and is water resistant once dry, so it does not reactivate with water like traditional gouache. For layered work in a mid-tone like Cosmos Pink, that is the whole argument. It handles beautifully alongside ink, pencil and collage, so a mixed media pad is a good place to try it.
Designer's gouache is made to stay resoluble, which is what makes it lovely for flat retouching and awkward for anything built in layers. Cosmos Pink is pigment in an acrylic emulsion. You get the same dead-flat matte surface, but once dry it stops moving, so pattern repeats and layered work stay exactly as you painted them.
Why Holbein Acrylic Gouache Is in Serious Studios
- Genuinely opaque. Holbein describes the range simply as an opaque acrylic paint. It covers, including over darker colour, which is the whole point of reaching for gouache rather than watercolour.
- Velvety matte, no sheen. Holbein describes the colour as opaque, intense, smooth and velvety. It dries flat, which is why it photographs and scans without glare.
- Water resistant once dry, so you can layer. Holbein’s own wording, and the reason the range exists. A dry layer will take another one over the top without lifting.
- The colour you mix is the colour you get. Holbein states it does not shift in colour tone from wet to dried colour. Anyone who has watched a perfect grey dry into a different grey will appreciate that.
- Built to use straight from the tube. Holbein says it is specifically designed to be used directly from the tube and will dry to even, uniform paint layers.
- Works on more than paper. Holbein lists paper, canvas, cloth, stone, wood, leather, plexiglass and concrete, with excellent adhesion, and full compatibility with all acrylic mediums.
Getting the Most Out of This Tube
Straight from the tube is the default. This is what Holbein designed it for, and it is where you get those even, flat, uniform layers. Add a little water to loosen it, but go easy: very diluted washes can dry streaky across a large flat area, so build coverage in thin even coats rather than flooding it on.
Watch the palette, not the clock. Holbein gives an open time of roughly 10 to 30 minutes and notes the drying time is much like ordinary watercolour. The practical consequence is that paint left sitting on the palette will go off and will not come back, so squeeze out small amounts as you need them.
It plays well with acrylic mediums. Holbein states the range is compatible with all acrylic mediums, so you can change the body or extend the working time if you want to. Soft synthetic brushes suit it, since they hold enough paint to lay a flat area without dragging.
Questions About Holbein Cosmos Pink
Why does it look gentler than a straight quinacridone pink?
Because it is a tint. Holbein includes PW6 titanium dioxide in the mix, and adding white lifts the value while pulling chroma down from where the raw quinacridone would sit. The upshot is a pink that reads soft and settled rather than glassy and intense. It is a deliberate choice, and it makes the colour far easier to place.
Is it useful for skin tones?
In stylised and illustrative work, very. It sits at value 5.5, which is a genuine mid-tone, so it works as a cheek and lip note over paler ground colours like Pale Peach or Shell Pink. Knock it back with a little Yellow Ochre if the rosiness is reading too cool for the figure you are painting.
Does Holbein Acrylic Gouache reactivate with water once dry?
No. Holbein describes it as water resistant once dry, specifically so you can paint layer upon layer, which is the main practical difference from traditional gum arabic gouache. Note that Holbein says water resistant rather than waterproof, and very thin, heavily diluted passages can still be disturbed if you scrub at them with a wet brush.
