About the Brand

Founded in the 13th century in Italy, the Fabriano Paper Mill is one of the world’s oldest and most renowned paper makers. Legend says the art of papermaking arrived in Fabriano when locals learned techniques from Arab prisoners captured at the port of Ancona. By 1264, Fabriano was producing high-quality paper made from cotton fibres and animal gelatin sizing, marking the beginning of a papermaking revolution in Europe. Innovators in watermarking, Fabriano papermakers pioneered the use of unique “invisible water signs” for authenticity and quality.

Even Michelangelo trusted Fabriano paper for his letters in 1514. In 1782, Pietro Miliani united local papermakers under the Cartiere Pietro Miliani Fabriano, which gained international acclaim, winning a gold medal at London’s Great Exhibition in 1851. After decades of growth, the mill became Cartiere Miliani Fabriano in 1947 and continues to set the standard for fine Italian paper.
